What would you do with more CPU cores? This is a question I see posted from an Intel employee on a yearly basis, and it actually is a difficult question to answer depending on your computing background. A gamer might not need more than four or six, and a number of workstation use cases are now GPU accelerated. Anyone never in a pure compute situation might not need more than four or six cores.

But what about virtual machines, complex encoding, or non-linear functional compute? How many cores are too many? Intel has recently released the Broadwell-EP based Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors, running up to 22 cores, and the smaller silicon die used for the 10-core parts has today filtered down to the prosumer and high-end desktop (HEDT) markets in four different parts, making up the Core i7 6800 and 6900 series. For today’s review we’ll be taking a look at all four.

nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-founders-editionReviews of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition have hit the web. The GTX 1070 is NVIDIA’s second video card in the Pascal lineup based on the new Pascal architecture. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition has not been released to the retail market yet, its launch coming on June 10th, but a number of websites have received copies of the new card for reviews and we have provided links to those sites below.

NVIDIA posted its first official driver for the GeForce GTX 1080, ahead of its retail availability from tomorrow (27/05). The new GeForce 368.25 WHQL appears to have the same feature-set and change-log as the GeForce 368.22 WHQL posted earlier this week, with the notable exception of supporting just the GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. It should come handy for some of the earliest adopters of the retail GTX 1080 cards.

You can download the new GeForce 368.25 WHQL drivers from GeForce Experience and GeForce.com.

Today’s SSD market is a crowded place with plenty of options for everyone but there is a sense of stagnation within it as well. While there’s no better time to be looking for a mid-range drive, the high end has been largely unmoved due to a lack of suitable interfaces. Motherboard manufacturers put their eggs in the SATA Express basket but thus far the actual storage manufacturers themselves have shunned that standard and have moved beyond SATA completely. First it was Intel’s 750 series, then Samsung’s 950 Pro, and now OCZ and by extension Toshiba are planting their feet in the NVMe space with the new RD400 series.

NVIDIA released its GeForce 368.22 WHQL drivers. These drivers are Game Ready for “Overwatch,” “World of Tanks,” and “War Thunder.” This includes performance optimization, SLI support (for games that support multi-GPU), and GeForce Experience optimal settings. These drivers also address a stuttering issue noticed with “Tom Clancy’s The Division,” after 20-30 minutes of gameplay, on SLI machines.

AMD released its encouraging fourth update to Radeon Software Crimson Edition for this month, with version 16.5.3 beta. The new drivers come with optimization for three games – “Overwatch,” “Total War: Warhammer,” and “Dota 2″ with Vulkan API. The drivers also add CrossFireX profiles for “Overwatch” and “Total War: Warhammer.” The drivers address a micro-stutter issue affecting CrossFire machines on “Fallout 4.”
