While Europe is struggling to act as a whole, Russia is trying to turn this new geopolitical situation to its advantage.

Even if weakened by western sanctions, Moscow has showed to the world to have the political will to pursue ambitious projects, despite high risks.

The Baltic States have always been considered by the Russians as part of their historical Sphere of Influence, and several thousands of troops have been already deployed in the region to conduct extensive military exercises.

Maybe this is the right moment to take advantage of Europe’s lack of cohesion and deliver a surgical – but devastating – blow to NATO?

Age of Sail games are few and far between for reasons unknown. The last really good one was Akella’s Age of Sail II: Privateer’s Bounty although Shrapnel Games’ Salvo! came close. Perhaps the intricacies of sailing frightens off gamers even with the popularity of Russel Crowe’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. [A terrible, terrible film -ED] Game Labs has taken up the challenge with Naval Action, an MMOG. Since the game is in Early Access, we have an opportunity to see how such a game on an esoteric subject develops.

combat-air-patrol-2-logoSim155 Ltd. has announced that Combat Air Patrol 2 (CAP2) VR Beta 1 is available now in the Steam client’s ‘BETAS’ tab. Here’s the news release by Ed Scio at developer Sim155:

I’ve got to admit VR in CAP2 is now pretty damn cool! With the first implementation I was slightly skeptical of the experience, feeling nauseous etc but with ‘Cinema Mode’ implemented for non pilot views there’s no longer a bucket by my desk.

There’s a lot of minor updates/fixes to come for VR, including:

  • Allow MSAA rendering
  • UI currently not shown in pilot view (after pressing ‘ESC’)
  • Mission planner not shown in VR (enable 2D Mirror to view it if required)
  • Radio commands input method
  • Update VR during loading screens
  • Add an Oculus API option

Also, in VR obviously can’t see your keyboard for input so I’ll add a method for highlighting cockpit controls by looking at them then selecting via a new control input. This will let you manage MFD’s, flaps, water injection, counter measures, canopy latch, eject handle, upfront controls etc using the headset and one button. This method will also be implemented in non VR mode to work with gamepad right stick cockpit view.

Right, back to finishing v808 with a new carrier and in-flight refueling!

For more detail on previous updates check out the dev blog.

Today, Paradox Interactive and Paradox Development Studio announced the next expansion for their hit grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV.

Thomas Paine wrote that laws get their force from the consent of those who agree to live under them. It is in this spirit of that Paradox Development Studio continues expand and improve Europa Universalis IV, with the upcoming Rights of Man.

This expansion to Paradox Development Studio’s best-selling historical strategy game introduces a number of small changes that add up to a deeper and more dynamic experience. Near the top of this list is the Great Power mechanic, where the most developed nations have access to new diplomatic options to bully or entice weaker neighbors. Keep that development going, or lose the powers you paid a high price for.

Rights of Man also adds a little more character to your monarchs, as they acquire traits that will give bonuses (or penalties) to your country, and affect how rival nations approach you. Beware the conqueror next door, but be nice to the generous king across the river – he may have some gold to spare in your time of need.

Other features coming in Rights of Man include:

  • New goals for Coptic and Fetishist religions
  • Greater control over adopting new cultures in your empire
  • Leader Traits giving battle hardened commanders added prowess
  • More detailed military instructions for Subject Nations
  • Revolutionary Republics now have Factions to balance
  • Ottoman Empire gets new Harem Politics events and options
  • AND MUCH MUCH MORE

As usual, the release of Rights of Man will be accompanied by a free update for all Europa Universalis IV players – and this one will have the first major overhaul of the technology system since launch.

The grandest historical strategy game is just getting grander. For more information on the game, click here.
