days-of-warDays of War seeks to bring the online FPS back to it’s competitive roots by simplifying gameplay and returning to a classic WW2 setting. Armed with a fully functional Alpha prototype and a $100k budget to get to early access ($50k from backers and $50k studio match), Days of War will be hitting the store at the end of this Summer.

For players who can’t wait that long, Alpha and Beta tester access can be secured by backing through Kickstarter. Full copies of the game are also available at a highly discounted price ($19).

Days of War is rejuvenating FPS fans of old. Clans from Medal of Honor, CoD 2, Day of Defeat, and Enemy Territory are reassembling with great enthusiasm due to general dissatisfaction with the evolution of the mass market shooter and lackluster annual releases.

Days of War also appeals to the younger generation who have yet to experience a great online WW2 shooter. (even Call of Duty: World at War was 8 years ago)

Days of War has reached its first stretch goal, guaranteeing the British forces make an appearance in game, and is looking like it’s on track to hit the next goal, the Soviet Army.

M2H and Blackmill Games announce the release of Horrors of War, a new free expansion for Verdun 1914-1918, their first-person shooter set in the trenches of World War I. This trailer shows off some of the content (and the gore) in the expansion, which they describe as “massive,” as it includes new units, a new region, new weapons and animations, and a new co-op game mode. This post has the details, and here is a bit:

With this expansion we offer more diverse historical battles in an immersive environment. Soldiers are confronted with more WW1 situations such as fighting during the night, offensive battles, more varied squads and a host of new weaponry that calls for careful tactical maneuvering. The realistic WW1 atmosphere has been strengthened with a new animation blending system, dismemberment, more blood, more corpses and a whole new region; Champagne.

sniper-elite-4A World War 2 themed Metal Gear Solid. Who doesn’t want to play that?

By Martin Robinson @ Eurogamer

Sniper Elite, Rebellion’s stealth action hybrid, is back, and it’s looking more handsome than ever. Cut free from the last generation of hardware – unlike Sniper Elite 3, this one’s exclusive to Xbox One, PS4 and PC – it’s looking mighty fine, even, all the rough edges that marked the series before smoothed out. Sniper Elite’s evolved from guilty pleasure to reliably enjoyable entertainment. This one could be a seriously good video game.

Watch the new First Look Gameplay trailer here.

The setting’s switched up from the North Africa of Sniper Elite 3 to Italy just before its invasion in September 1943. It’s afforded Rebellion some gorgeous locales – in a brief hands-off demo we’re shown the bay, alongside a level set in sumptuous countryside under the imposing shadow of a grand viaduct – as well as a little more breathing space. Sandbox games such as this love throwing around grand statistics, so try this one on for size: the smallest level in Sniper Elite 4 is three times the size of the biggest one seen in its predecessor.

just-cause-3-logoJust Cause 3: Sky Fortress, the first content pack from the Air, Land and Sea Expansion Pass which was previously only available to pass holders – is now on general sale for all players. Get it now via Steam.

Sky Fortress contains a brand new set of missions that introduce a new threat – the eDEN Corporation and their huge and terrifying Sky Fortress, with its army of deadly robotic drones. To tackle his deadly new adversary, Rico Rodriguez will use a new upgradeable, rocket-powered, weaponised ‘Bavarium Wingsuit’ fitted with shoulder mounted machine guns and auto targeting missiles – alongside his new ‘Eviction’ personal defence drone and ‘Bavarium Splitter’ assault rifle.

“The new content will fundamentally alter how our players approach the game – we’re really looking forward to seeing how fans adapt to the new Wingsuit,” said Tobias Andersson, Senior Producer at Avalanche Studios. “The new story missions, challenges and gadgets that can be taken into the main game really mix things up, and we can’t wait for players to revisit Medici and start getting even more creative”.

days-of-warThe WWII shooter revival is coming sooner than you think

Days of War lowers pricing, increases rewards, announces stretch goals, and shows a new gameplay trailer, in a new Kickstarter Campaign with the goal of releasing on Steam Early Access in August.

Driven Arts, the studio behind Days of War, thinks the WWII revival goes far beyond next generation visuals:

  • Control back to the players. Dedicated servers and admin tools, console access, definable rulesets. These are all the things we used to have but don’t anymore. Hopping into a quick matchmaking session is always fun, but even better are micro-communities built around dedicated servers. Many old games still have vibrant (though small) player communities for this reason.
  • Accessible but deep. Let’s face it. Most of the people who grew up playing CoD 1/2, DoD, Wolfenstein ET, and MOHAA, are older now. They dont have time to grind through unlocks, they just want something they can sit down and play for 30 mins after they put their kids to bed. Those older games had a certain simplicity to them that likens them more to a sport than todays shooters, which is why people still play them after all these years.
  • Indie through and through – We aren’t trying to convert Black Ops players to WII, we’re trying to serve the underserved communities, even if it means fewer dollars in our pockets, because we are starting to tire of playing games that are 10 years old even though they are more fun than what we have today.
  • Custom mapping – This was a crucial part of older shooters. George Rivara, Lead Developer says, “I love to build, and I think this is trait many other people share, but the programming skills required present a massive barrier. It’s our job to make it easier for them to create. I want to let every player unleash whatever it is inside them that makes messing around in minecraft or playing with legos so gratifying.”

in 2016 Days of War will join the first batch of shooters built on Unreal Engine 4, releasing on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
