March your way across untouched new environments and showcase the depth of your true ability against remarkable new opponents in the first major DLC for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition.

Sibling of the fan-favourite Rat, the Canary has a similarly craven attitude, preferring to harass invading forces with traps and infernal defences. The Trader is greed personified, a depraved gold-hungry merchant who prioritises a robust economy but won’t hesitate to attack with strength when required. Vanquishing these fierce foes will ultimately take wits, courage and perhaps a healthy dose of luck.

Carve a path to glory through nine thrilling missions, each designed to stress your tactics and game knowledge. Embrace the confrontation, improve with each struggle and climb to untold levels of prestige! Battling against the sly schemes of the Canary and the powerful economies of the Trader is not for the fair-hearted. Are you prepared for it?

stronghold-crusader-definitive-editionWith the release of Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition almost upon us, Firefly Studios has saved the best for last, with today’s video update revealing their full post-launch release plan! In addition to the usual fixes, improvements and balancing expected of an expanded RTS remaster like Crusader, Firefly is also planning two major updates coming later this year.

Following the positive reception of their two public demos, the first released on January 20th alongside the game’s reveal and a second in June’s Steam Next Fest, the ‘castle sim’ developer can now commit to two major content updates. As a result the aforementioned Autumn and Winter Updates will both be released this year, alongside two separate paid DLCs.

Alongside community driven features coming at launch, which include new buildings and increased unit caps, Firefly’s post-release plan supplements those already confirmed. With 93% of players expressing an interest in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition DLC, it was clear to the developer that post-launch content was something their community wanted, not exactly a surprise for their favourite game!

The free Autumn Update will feature a series-first economic campaign as well as a brand new CPU commander. Five missions will challenge players to complete a series of economic objectives, leaning heavily into the city builder gameplay mechanics of the castle builder series. The new computer-controlled commander can meanwhile be played as friend or foe, selectable in the game’s offline skirmish and online multiplayer modes as an opponent or ally. Last but not least, three new maps will also be added, one for skirmish, another in Free Build mode and a balanced multiplayer battlefield.

Following this content drop, the game’s free Winter Update will add perhaps the greatest player request so far… The ability to customise CPU opponents, castles and campaigns! Players will be able to create the rivals or allies of their dreams (or nightmares), design their defences and then place all of this into custom mission scenarios created by the community. If that wasn’t enough, the Winter Update continues this community-first trend with the addition of a second co-op campaign of missions. Was the 10 missions found in the first co-op trail not enough for you? Well, dare to brave the challenges of this new trail and you might just come out victorious. Once again a new map pack of three maps will be added to the overall pool, keeping things fresh for players after launch.

Releasing alongside these updates will be a pair of paid DLCs, which in Stronghold tradition will each introduce two new CPU opponents and a series of challenging missions known to fans as a ‘skirmish trail’. More will be revealed about these characters in due course, however today’s video may contain some clues for eagle eyed viewers. Either way you can expect a proper challenge, with some formidable new opponents mixing things up for series veterans.

stronghold-crusader-definitive-editionGood morrow, my liege! After 150,000 demo downloads, three times as many as Stronghold: Definitive Edition achieved back in 2023, Firefly Studios has compiled thousands of players’ feedback for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. Channeling these into player requested enhancements, several key improvements are now being made for the game’s release.

Ahead of its July 15th launch, Firefly dives into some of these community requested features and confirms key information on maximum unit counts in their final ‘Feature Spotlight’ development diary.

Watch the Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition – Gameplay & Feature Improvements Trailer HERE.

Demos are vital to the success of our games” said Nick Tannahill, Firefly Studio Head. “We’ve had loads of fantastic feedback come in since our January reveal and first public demo, with enough time to implement many of these requests before launch. We keep our creative vision and goals for the game, while also getting the community involved and giving them a degree of authorship. It’s a win-win for us.

Actively played since its original 2002 release by the Stronghold community, some of Crusader’s most knowledgeable and experienced players have given feedback on Firefly’s upcoming Definitive Edition. This feedback was studied in close detail ahead of the game’s reveal earlier this year, with a second round of suggestions gathered through the demo’s feedback form.

“All Crusader Extreme features will be included in Crusader: Definitive Edition, including the epic 10,000 units cap.”

Among the other features requested by players since January, including raising the overall troop count to a whopping 10,000 soldiers in a single game to match that of Stronghold Crusader Extreme, is the addition of Islamic buildings and related workers for the game’s Arabic and Bedouin Lords, as well as many vital bug fixes. The latter addresses specific exploits and issues discovered by the game’s most dedicated players across more than 20 years of play.

From map sizes up to four times the size of those available in the original, through to custom toggles for skirmish mode and online leaderboards, Firefly are striving to tick every possible box for fans of the original game, collating feedback before and after the reveal. A definitive edition should include absolutely everything players want out of Crusader and that’s what this final version of the game intends to deliver.

Wishlist Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition now on Steam ahead of the game’s full release on July 15th 2025. The desert is a cruel place to fight. Are you sure you have the heart for it?

stronghold-crusader-definitive-editionGreetings, Sire! Straight from its stellar public announcement to being in the top five most popular upcoming games in the Steam RTS Fest with 150k wishlists and 130k demo downloads, Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is going from strength to strength on the road to its July 15th launch.

Today, Firefly Studios is thrilled to dive into some of the most highly requested gameplay additions from players for this expanded remaster – brand new units and AI characters! Just as a warrior is only as capable as their weapon, an RTS is only as masterful as its troops and its enemies.

Watch the 8 New Units Trailer HERE.

Bringing the new units to life in Crusader: DE was both a challenge and a blast. With most of the original assets missing, everything had to be rebuilt from the foundations,” said Darrin Horbal, Senior Graphic Designer. “This gave me the chance to refine the animations and push for smoother movement, clearer silhouettes, and stronger visual storytelling. The Heavy Camel was especially fun (and tricky), but there’s nothing more satisfying than watching these characters charge across the battlefield, fully animated and game-ready.

Units are the foundation of any good RTS combat system, being the building blocks for your ultimate military force. On top of the original troop types present in the first game, Crusader: DE aims to offer players an entirely new arsenal of warriors, each equipped with specialised gear for every challenge in the long march to victory. These new units were carefully based on the weapons and strategies of the historical Bedouin Arab tribes that have been present in the Middle East as early as 6000 BCE.

“With new missions comes new challenges, and new challenges demand new solutions. Enter the Bedouin tribe units – several thousand years of desert-hardened tactics and ruthlessly efficient tools.”

Bedouin societies are masters at surviving in the unforgiving desert environment, making highly resourceful use of the items and raw materials at their disposal. The development of these units was driven by the aim of creating the level of strategic depth that players have come to expect of the Stronghold series. From the skilled Sappers that are adept at demolishing structures and the pyromaniac Ambushers that drown their enemies in righteous fire, to the brutish, burly Eunuchs dual wielding scimitars and the life-saving medical wisdom of the Healers, players’ only limit would be their own crafty imagination.

Watch the New Characters Trailer HERE.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition not only elevates the original content that players loved but will bolster the whole package with entirely fresh mission scenarios, units and, of course, AI characters.

These four new characters serve as opponents for players to fully test their strategic depth against and bring the total of characters in Crusader DE to a whopping 20 (!) Lords. Each of these new lords has been designed to embody a unique tactical and cultural aspect of the ancient world:

The Kahin is a cold and ruthless priestess of a desert sect. Her mission is to preserve the sanctity of the desert and to kill all those that violate it. As a Bedouin-based AI with a balanced playstyle revolving around Eunuchs and Heavy Camels, she ranks medium on the difficulty scale.

The Sentinel is a stalwart titan of the Templar Order, a creature so bred for battle that he’s never been seen without his helmet. He employs a deadly cocktail of units including the crippling crossbowmen, marauding macemen and the brand new Demolishers. Being harder to counter than other AI opponents, he ranks medium-to-high difficulty wise.

“We know that the [original] AI opponents have lived long in players’ memories, so whilst we’re polishing them for a new release, we’re making sure not to disrupt the tried-and-true formula.”

Then there’s the Nomad, a confident Bedouin warrior whose protection spreads to whatever land he calls his home. Taking after his wandering lifestyle, he utilises Light Camels and Skirmishers to rush his opponents and catch them off guard. A good opponent for those who are looking for a rapid and relentless skirmish match, he ranks lower on the difficulty scale.

Last but not least is the Jewel, kin of long-standing Stronghold character Sir Longarm and a character who first appeared in Stronghold: Definitive Edition. A veritable force of nature in her own right, she bulldozes enemies using legions of tanky knights and swordsmen, only preferring to move out after amassing sufficient forces. As such, she sits high on the difficulty scale – a true challenge for anyone brave enough to face her.

stronghold-crusader-definitive-editionGird your loins and sharpen your steel because, a full quarter century since the studio’s inception, Firefly is ecstatic to announce Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition! Following Stronghold: DE in 2023, which has sold over half a million copies, Firefly can now reveal their best-selling Crusader title will return with a new definitive edition releasing this year on July 15th 2025!

This fan-favourite entry in the BAFTA-nominated Stronghold series has been rebuilt with the game’s original developers adding brand new content, elevated graphics and extensive player-requested features.

We have tried to go beyond what our players expect,” said Nick Tannahill, Studio Head at Firefly Studios and Stronghold series veteran of 13 years. “This is their favourite game and it deserves to be remastered in all its pre-rendered isometric glory, but with plenty of extra bells and whistles! We would not be doing this were it not for those still playing multiplayer, designing maps and creating mods, like the awesome Unofficial Crusader Patch, so I can’t wait to hear what they all think of our upcoming public demos. We really are dedicated to taking our time with Stronghold and acting on feedback whenever possible.
