Mozilla is announcing that the latest version of its Firefox browser, Firefox 57, is just too good for just another numbered release. The improvements under the hood are so great, they say, and the performance improvements over previous Firefox releases are so grand, that only one name would have been enough to convey this message. That’s why the latest Firefox release has been christened “Firefox Quantum“.

Mozilla are saying their new Firefox Quantum browser delivers 2x the score in Speedometer as their previous Firefox 56. The new, refined browser didn’t appear overnight, though; it’s seen numerous improvements under the hood through the application of the Goldilocks principle to browser design, straddling an approach between increased performance and acceptable memory usage. Multi-process and optimized memory footprint are part of the secret sauce, but a new, super-charged CSS engine written in Rust goes a long way. Prioritization of the open tab also helps this increased speed, while (Mozilla says) reducing memory utilization by 30% when compared to Chrome.

Sim155 Ltd. has announced that Combat Air Patrol 2 (CAP2) v810.4 update for the flight and naval combat simulator game is expected to be available in early October. This new update will contain a richer environment, with more buildings, lush vegetation, and a host of custom objects including power lines, lighthouses, water tanks, ATC towers, rigs etc. Lighting has been added to roads, runways, taxiways and buildings, illuminating villages and cities for superior immersion. The cockpit lighting in the AV8B Harrier II has also been updated, including night illumination.

Combat Air Patrol 2 (CAP2) is a flight and naval combat simulator game for PC (Steam/Windows) where you pilot the AV8B Harrier II. After initial flight and tactical training you will be pitched into an immersive scenario against aggressive ground, sea and air based enemies. Use your skill as a pilot and your tactical awareness to engage in dogfights, carry out ground attacks and command your fleet to ultimately ensure the safety of your comrades and the final capitulation of the enemy. Strategic decisions such as commanding your fleet on the tactical map and your performance in the air will affect the final outcome: Go ‘gung ho’ with a full out assault and the outcome will be in the balance or plan ahead and the end result will be your ultimate victory.

Activision has released a pair of “Meet the Allies” mini-trailers from Call of Duty: WWII.  One trailer introduces Major Arthur Crowley, while the second introduces French Resistance fighter Rousseau.

Second Wave and Closer Combat Now Available from Eugen Systems and Paradox

Paradox Interactive today launched the first DLC for Steel Division: Normandy 44. Second Wave, the first DLC since the tactical RTS game’s release in May 2017, is now available on Windows PCs for $7.99. Today’s update also features a new free game mode, “Closer Combat”, the first of several free updates coming this year, as announced in the content roadmap.

The Second Wave DLC rolls out four new divisions, including two Allied: the 4th Armored Division (US) and 1st Special Service Brigade (UK), and two Axis: 9. Panzer (DE) and 16. Luftwaffen (DE). Second Wave also includes an exclusive ace – Lt. Col. Creighton W. Abrams and his famous thunderbolt M4 tank, along with 35 new units, including the legendary M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer!

Closer Combat, based on the Conquest Mode aims to make the beginning of battle more authentic by restricting the vehicle rush to the center of the map. This gives players more time to define strategy and more control on unit placement. In Closer Combat mode:

• All transported units can be purchased and deployed without a vehicle.
• Deployment zones are closer to each other than in other modes.
• Players earn points once they control 52% of the battlefield (instead of 51%).

Other new features in today’s update include a remastered, more accessible first campaign mission, a new shortcut to toggle “slow-mo” in single player mode, and official servers for 4v4 games, to help reduce lags induced by the peer-to-peer mode, along with more balancing and more bug fixing.

Players can dive into in-game events throughout September

World of Warships is celebrating its second anniversary! Over the past couple of years, the game has gone from strength to strength with the help of its passionate community. Just two years ago, World of Warships launched with 10 maps and 90 ships from Japan and the US. Now, players can take to the seas with 228 ships across 10 nations and a massive 30 battle arenas.

World of Warships didn’t just introduce more vehicles and battlefields—the game significantly stepped up its graphics, added weather effects like fearsome storms, as well as added PvE missions and clan functionality.

“I’m really excited about the sheer amount of work the team has done over two years,” said Arthur Plociennik, World of Warships Executive Producer. “We’ve stepped up our game by cooperating with our players and channeling their feedback to improve and evolve their experience. So far, we delivered many updates and have big plans of moving further.”

NVIDIA today released the latest version of their GeForce graphics drivers. Version 385.69 of their drivers is a Game Ready, WHQL-certified release that brings official support for Project Cars 2 and Total War: WARHAMMER II which are both coming out in a matter of days. Simultaneously, this release also optimizes performance in the open beta for Call of Duty: WWII, EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone, FIFA 18, Forza Motorsport 7, From Other Suns’ open beta, Raiders of the Broken Planet, as well as Star Wars Battlefront 2′s open beta.

This release also features a security update for specific driver components that went unnoticed until now, and also identifies and fixes multiple bugs. AMD announced today they are bringing multi-GPU support for RX Vega 64 and RX Vega 56 with their upcoming Radeon Crimson ReLive Edition 17.9.2 drivers. This CrossFire support is for two GPUs only, so it appears AMD is going on the same path as NVIDIA in not having official support for three or more GPUs, which by itself is a point of discussion. Note that these drivers are not out yet, and this announcement serves to alert the user base to what is coming up.
