Part of a free platform update available later this month

Bohemia Interactive today deployed a new Arma 3 developer diary video, featuring the upcoming new Arma 3 Scenario Editor: Eden 3D Editor. In the video, Senior Designer Karel Mořický, Programmer Filip Sadovský, and Creative Director Jay Crowe provide a more in-depth look at the Eden Editor’s key features and development process.

While content creation has always been at the heart of the Arma series, the brand new Eden Editor represents a massive leap forward. Users will now be able to design their scenario from within the 3D game environment, which makes building your own scenarios – using Arma 3′s vast library of weapons, characters, vehicles, buildings, and other objects – much more effective and fun. Plus, people can publish their creations to the Arma 3 Steam Workshop, or subscribe to 17,000+ scenarios made by other players.

The Eden 3D Editor will be made available to all Arma 3 players as part of a free platform update scheduled for release later in February 2016. Arma 3 Apex now available for pre-order on the Bohemia Store

Entering its third year since official release, Bohemia Interactive today revealed some of their plans for Arma 3 in 2016. Via a new video blog, Creative Director Jay Crowe provides an overview of the ten most significant highlights of 2015, and a list of the ten most important things to look forward to in the upcoming year. Among the most anticipated items will be the release of the Arma 3 Apex expansion, which will bring players to the 100 km² South Pacific island archipelago of Tanoa. The Apex expansion will be supported by new vehicles and weapons, a co-op campaign – and a free platform update that will improve Arma 3′s graphics, audio, usability, and more.

In terms of updates, the year will be kicked of by the release of the free Arma 3 Eden Update in February. This update will introduce the Eden 3D Editor – a brand scenario editor which will enable users to place and edit objects, define waypoints, set mission objectives, and more, directly within the 3D game environment. This represents a massive leap forward from the classic scenario editor, which has been a staple of the Arma series since its conception. Another welcome addition will be the new Launcher-based Server Browser, which will make it much easier for players to search and join a multiplayer server of their liking. Another highlight of the Eden Update will be the audio improvements, which come in the form of new audio configurations and samples. The update will be further complemented by a variety of usability improvements. Among the changes will be the replacement of the in-game font, which should make in-game text better legible.

Next up in line is 2016′s Apex. Similar to previous Arma 3 DLC, the Arma 3 Apex expansion will deliver new premium content, and a free platform update available to everyone who owns Arma 3. In terms of premium content, Arma 3 Apex’ crown jewel is Tanoa – the new terrain which was first revealed at E3 last year. In addition, the expansion will include new vehicles and weapons, and a co-op campaign. While more specific details will be unveiled at a later date, new vehicle classes, namely Light Strike Vehicles and VTOL aircraft, have been confirmed to be among the Apex arsenal. To make the new content shine, the free platform update will provide a graphics upgrade that will apply to the entire game. The upgrade includes an overhaul of the game lighting configuration, and introduction of new Sea Shader and Screen-space Reflections technology.

Bohemia Interactive also plans to build upon their new (web-based) service, Arma 3 Units. Launched in basic form at the end of last year, Arma 3 Units aims to connect players and Arma community groups. In the near future, Bohemia Interactive will increase the functionality by enabling users to join units with their Bohemia Account, manage unit roles, schedule events, post announcements, and more. Further down the line, the studio intends to integrate parts of the service into the game itself.

The Arma 3 Apex expansion, and the supporting free platform update, is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2016. As of today, enthusiasts will be able to pre-order the Arma 3 Apex expansion on the Bohemia Store (regular price: 29.99 EUR / 24.99 GBP / 34.99 USD – pre-order price (20% discount): 23.99 EUR / 19.99 GBP / 27.99 USD). Those who are new to Arma 3, but want the most complete experience, can choose to pick up the Arma 3 Apex Edition (price: 59.99 EUR / 44.99 GBP / 69.99 USD), which includes the Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition, all Arma 3 DLC released so far (Karts/Helicopters/Marksmen), and the Arma 3 Apex expansion.

End Game 2.0, new stamina system, refined character hitpoint model, Arma 3 Units

Serving as an important stepping stone towards Arma 3 Apex – a major expansion for Arma 3 coming in 2016, Bohemia Interactive today released the Nexus Update (new trailer) for their PC-exclusive tactical military shooter game. Highlights of this major new update include the improved and expanded End Game multiplayer mode, refinements to core game mechanics such as ‘stamina’ and ‘personal protective equipment’, as well as the option for Arma 3 content creators to define ‘mod dependencies’, which enable the automatic installation of mods that require other mods on the Steam Workshop.

First and foremost, the Nexus Update adds two additional instances to End Game (Feres & Zaros), and improves the already available Kavala scenario. Each of the three scenarios has a distinct gameplay focus, ranging from small-scale infantry engagements to more long-distance (vehicle) warfare, with player counts between 8vs8 up to 16vs16. Besides the additional and improved End Game scenarios, the Nexus Update adds a brand new multiplayer system in the form of ‘Spectator Cam‘, which, as the name implies, allows players to join a lobby as a spectator. The Spectator Cam system is designed to be modular. This means that, even though it has been purposefully developed for End Game, it can also be applied to, and modified for, community-created game modes.

What is End Game?
End Game is a relatively new multiplayer mode in Arma 3, which was first introduced in the free platform update that accompanied the Arma 3 Marksmen DLC. In End Game, two sides compete to locate and secure valuable schematics, featuring a combination of PvE/PvP gameplay across three phases. In the first phase, each team has to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) by clearing out AI-controlled enemies. Then, in phase two, both teams need to download intelligence by completing small objectives. The team that completes phase two first, triggers the third phase, and receives the location of valuable schematics. To win the game, these End Game schematics need to be delivered to a designated upload site, while the other team fights them for possession.

Besides End Game, a key focus of the Nexus Update is to refine core game mechanics related to movement and shooting. With the implementation of a new stamina system, the game provides a more logical and better communicated way of determining a player’s ability to sprint and, subsequently, their aiming precision. The new system factors in a player’s current loadout and other elements like terrain, meaning that those who plan and move thoughtfully are more likely to remain combat effective. Another important change comes in the form of a refined ‘hitpoint-based’ damage model for characters. This enhances the lethality of shots to unprotected parts of the body, rewarding marksmanship skills and making personal protective gear more meaningful.

Alongside the Nexus Update, Bohemia Interactive today also deployed the Foundation Release of ‘Arma 3 Units’ – a web-based service for connecting Arma 3 players with Arma community groups. In essence, Arma 3 Units could be described as an online catalog of Arma community groups (referred to as ‘units’), and a promotional/recruitment tool for new and existing groups/clans. While the initial launch of the website delivers the core components of the service, namely the browsing of units and registration of new units, Bohemia Interactive intends to add more features later on. The development plans for the service are further explained in a special post on the Arma 3 dev blog.

Last but certainly not least, in support of the Nexus Update, this Saturday Bohemia Interactive will be hosting the final match in the official Arma 3 End Game Tournament. In this tournament, 8 teams – composed of Arma 3 developers, community groups, and other special guests – faced off for the glorious title of Arma 3 End Game Champion. Similar to the Quarter- and Semi-Finals, which were already covered in live streams throughout November, the Final match (Arma 3 Ambassadors vs RG Task Force) will be live streamed to www.twitch.tv/arma3official on Saturday December 5, starting at 18:00 UTC, with commentary by community shoutcasters Mic One and Stardog. More information about the End Game Tournament rules, teams, and streams can be found here.

If you want to learn even more about the Nexus Update, be sure to read this new dev blog by Creative Director Jay Crowe. The complete changelog for the Nexus Update (1.54) is available for further examination here.

Bohemia Interactive today deployed a brand new video guide for their tactical military shooter Arma 3. While previous episodes in the official Community Guide series focused on the attack, this new episode explores the basic principles of mounting an effective and efficient defense – making it a must-watch for everyone with an interest in tactical gameplay.

In the video, Andrew Gluck (better known as Dslyecxi, leader of the Arma community group Shack Tactical) examines the most essential planning considerations for a solid defense, such as understanding the terrain, defining areas of responsibility, and identifying potential force multipliers. In addition, the video describes what vehicles and weapons are most suitable for defending a location. To increase your odds of surviving in battle, Dslyecxi concludes the video by discussing individual actions, such as positioning and communications, and knowing when it’s time to retreat.

Previous episodes in the Arma 3 Community Guide video series covered topics such as infantry combat, multiplayer teamwork, helicopters, sniper- and launcher teams, combined arms warfare, air assaults, guerrilla warfare, ground vehicle crew, machine gun teams, and the Arma 3 Zeus DLC. The complete Community Guide playlist is available on Arma 3’s YouTube Channel.

Source: Bohemia Interactive

With over two million copies sold to date, Bohemia Interactive today presented its plans for their tactical military shooter Arma 3 in the next year. The 2015-2016 roadmap, which was shared via a blog post written by the game’s Creative Director Jay Crowe, features two free platform updates that pave the way for the Arma 3 expansion in the second quarter of 2016.

First up will be the ‘Nexus Update‘, which is scheduled for release in November this year, and focuses upon the refinement of core features and multiplayer systems. This includes significant improvements to Arma 3 gameplay features such as stamina/fatigue, personal protective equipment, and more. Furthermore, the Nexus Update will deliver a revamped version of the End Game multiplayer mode, that was introduced earlier this year. The renewed End Game multiplayer will be paired with various improvements to general multiplayer systems, which can also be used in other official and unofficial Arma 3 multiplayer scenarios. Last but not least, alongside the Nexus Update, Bohemia Interactive plans to deploy a foundation build of ‘Arma 3 Units’ – a web-based service that aims to connect players with community groups.

The second platform update for Arma 3, codenamed ‘Eden Update‘, is penciled in for the beginning of next year (2016). The highlight of this update will be the official introduction of the brand new Eden 3D Editor. Designed as the logical evolution of the classic 2D Scenario Editor, which has been a core component of the Arma series since its debut in 2001, the new Eden Editor will give players far more control over their creations than ever before by enabling them to place and edit entities directly within the 3D game environment. Besides the new editor, the Eden Update will be complemented by several Arma 3 usability tweaks, and an overhaul of how players discover and join multiplayer sessions.

Bohemia Interactive’s tactical military shooter to receive a 3D scenario editor in an upcoming free platform update

This Tuesday September 22th, starting at 18:00 UTC, Bohemia Interactive will be hosting a special sneak preview live stream for the upcoming brand new Eden 3D Editor for Arma 3. The session is expected to be about one hour and will be streamed to the official Arma 3 channel on Twitch.

During the live stream, Eden Editor Designer Karel Mořický and Arma 3′s Creative Director Jay Crowe – supported by other members from the Arma 3 devteam – will provide a first look at the new editor, demonstrate its features and improvements over Arma 3′s original 2D editor, and discuss some of the key design decisions. The only thing that’s changed is everything.

With its long-standing focus on user-created content and modding, the classic 2D scenario editor has always been a major staple of the Arma series. Taking a massive leap forward, the powerful new Eden 3D Editor for Arma 3 will give players far more control over their creations than ever before. Users will now be able to directly create or edit entities, such as characters, vehicles, buildings and other objects, within the 3D game environment. They can also set mission objectives, define waypoints, control time of day and weather, and make use of all other functionality previously available in the classic 2D editor.

All of these capabilities can be accessed via Eden Editor’s easy-to-use interface. It enables even the beginning user to create a basic single- or multiplayer scenario in a matter of minutes. The more advanced scenario creators, on the other hand, can continue to make use of the extensive library of custom scripts. Plus their previously created scenarios made in the original 2D editor will be backwards-compatible. In addition, modders can extend the editor’s functionality via custom plugins. As such, the Eden Editor will form the go-to destination for playing around in Arma 3′s rich military sandbox platform, featuring detailed simulation, large-scale terrains, and a wide variety of soldiers, weaponry, vehicles, and other objects.

Last but not least, due to the seamless integration of the Arma 3 Steam Workshop into the Eden Editor, sharing your scenario, and downloading the scenarios made by others, has never been more easy. With more than 16.000 scenarios, addons, and mods published to the Steam Workshop at present, Arma 3 players already have access to thousands of hours of additional gameplay – and this number is expected to grow significantly with the anticipated introduction of the new editor.

The new editor will be made available to all Arma 3 players for free as part of a future platform update. More details will be provided during the sneak preview live stream. The Eden Editor’s release date will be shared at a later date.

Bohemia Interactive released a special Arma 3 developer diary video, providing more details on Tanoa – the new terrain featured in the upcoming Arma 3 expansion, which is scheduled for release in the first half of 2016. The new terrain, a 100 km² South Pacific archipelago, was originally revealed during the PC Gaming Show at E3 2015.

In the developer diary, Arma 3′s Creative Director Jay Crowe and Project Lead Joris-Jan van ‘t Land discuss how the devteam came to a South Pacific destination, describe some of the key characteristics and points of interest on Tanoa, and reflect on development so far and the roadmap ahead.

Tanoa will be the first South Pacific destination featured in the Arma series. Previous Arma locations included the Mediterranean islands of Altis and Stratis (Arma 3), the Eastern-European country of Chernarus (Arma 2), the Middle-Eastern nation of Takistan (Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead), and various other terrains in the fictional Armaverse.

Besides the new Tanoa terrain, the Arma 3 expansion will include new vehicles, weapons, attachments and gear, characters, playable content, and more. The expansion is scheduled to be released in the first half of 2016 and will be distributed as DLC for the base Arma 3 game.
