Microsoft retrofitting Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheels that overheat and smoke

By Marcus Yam @ DailyTech

No other game on Xbox 360 demands a custom accessory to date like Forza Motorsport 2. Microsoft’s racing simulator is the killer app that is driving gamers to pick up the Wireless Racing Wheel for Xbox 360. Since the release of Forza Motorsport 2, the Wireless Racing Wheel has been a hot item – in more than just one sense of the word.

Microsoft has just issued a warning to consumers that a component in its Wireless Racing Wheel “chassis may in rare cases overheat and release smoke when the AC-DC power supply is used to energize the Wheel.”

I know this is an Xbox 360 hardware issue, but I thought it would be good to let our readers know about this, since many have consoles and or kids who play them.

According to Microsoft, there have been no reports of fire, personal injury or property damage due to the malfunction. Regardless, Microsoft is recommending users of the Wheel to operate in battery mode, thus disabling the force feedback functions.

Owners of the Wireless Racing Wheel are advised to contact Microsoft Xbox support at 1-800-4-MYXBOX to request for a retrofit repair to rectify the defect. Alternatively, users may print out the retrofit form (PDF) and either mail or fax to Microsoft.
