Let me begin this review of Down in Flames with a statement: I am not a fan of card games like Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon because they've never made sense to me. I expected something akin to a flight sim which allowed the player to pilot his planes and make special moves during the dogfight by queuing up "cards," sort of how Star Wars Galaxies originally worked. After installing Down in Flames, trying to play, reading manual, and trying to play again, I took it to a card-playing friend, but his reaction was the same as mine – this game is not playable.

I feel that the reviewer here completely missed the mark. He obviously did no research and didn't bother to visit the forum. He also must not have submitted a bug report, as the game developers usually respond very quickly (within 1 day) to questions, suggestions and problems.

The meat and potatoes of this game are in the multiplayer mode. Up to 4 people can play in up to 2 wings, against each other (Or co-op against the computer, if 2 human players go out on the same side). Most of the guys that play online will answer questions during the game, in the chat windows, which will help "smooth" the learning curve.

Did the reviewer even mention the online campaigns? You can choose a region and date, and play 1 on 1 against the computer or a human player, with a set level and type of resource for the region!

I too can relate to the fact that previous card games that I've attempted to play were incomprehensible. This is not one of them. For me, once I was able to see several rounds played out, I began to learn under what conditions you can play what cards, and that's the extent of the "learning curve".

In addition to enhancing your "deck" with cards that you buy with experience points, you can give your pilots abilities, like "Check Six" that will give that pilot an extra card when an enemy is on his tail. There are around 20 different cards and abilities to spend your XP on.

Anyway, it is a very good game, from a very small developer. The only problem with it, is that it's been out long enough now, and the buzz has worn off ; there's usually very few players online to play with.

They did release a demo back when this came out, so feel free to download the demo from somewhere and check it out. I think it's most people that are into a strategy war game would like this game.
