Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark Review

One of the finest flight sims ever to hit the PC.

By Bennett Ring, IGN AU

Pity the poor flight sim. Once a staple ingredient of any PC gamer's diet, these incredibly complex pieces of software have since become a rare delicacy enjoyed by a hidden audience. Once upon a time every second game on the PC was a flight sim, but their limelight slowly petered out as more accessible genres engulfed the PC. Yet there's still a sizable audience of virtual Mavericks out there, eagerly waiting for the latest virtual cockpit. Sadly though, this large yet quiet audience doesn't justify the development attention it once did, and the result has been a dearth of sims. Simmers have watched in horror as their beloved genre gasped its dying breath over the last few years, with only re-releases of older games, and the promise of a handful of titles, to keep them going. Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark (BS) was one of those titles, and has been in development for what feels like decades.

Enemy Engaged 2 Review

Posted by Donster on: 2007-07-30 15:49:13 in category: Helo Combat News [ Print ]

By James Allen @ Out of Eight

Simulation games illustrate why PC gaming is great: you can do something you would never be able to do in real life. Most of these games center around warfare (with one notable exception) because blowing stuff up is fun. A very distinguished simulation was released in the year 2000: Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs. Hokum. This close follow-up to Enemy Engaged: Apache vs. Havoc featured a spectacular dynamic campaign in a realistic simulation, something that was noteworthy back then and even relevant today. There is a very obsessed (that’s the right word for it) community dedicated to producing various mods and scenarios to the original, but they can only take the engine so far. Enter Enemy Engaged 2, an update to the original series, charged with bringing the simulation back to the future (complete with flux capacitor). Will Enemy Engaged 2 offer enough improvements over the original games to satisfy both veteran and novice players alike?

Whirlwind Over Vietnam Review

Posted by Donster on: 2007-05-28 18:30:44 in category: Helo Combat News [ Print ]

By James King @ Worthplaying

Whirlwind over Vietnam is a helicopter flight simulator set in the Vietnam War era, in which you'll pilot the UH-1 Huey through 10 historical missions against the Viet Cong. The premise is somewhat different and refreshing, but the list of problems with this game goes on and on. The controls are quite complex and intricate, as would be expected from a flight simulation game, but there is no training, tutorial, or flight school missions that could ease you into the experience. It starts you off with a real mission right away and expects you to know how to fly immediately. Flight sims of this type might be a dying breed in today's age of gaming, and this title certainly does not help the situation.

Whirlwind Over Vietnam Review

Posted by Donster on: 2007-04-25 16:04:34 in category: Helo Combat News [ Print ]

The novelty of the Vietnam War setting is just about all that Whirlwind Over Vietnam has going for it.

By Brett Todd, GameSpot

Developer G5 Software deserves a lot of praise for its chopper sim Whirlwind Over Vietnam. Unfortunately, virtually all of these kudos are for the company's decision to skip World War II and set a flight sim in Southeast Asia, not for anything to do with gameplay. Everything beyond the offbeat setting ranges from merely pedestrian to downright bad, thanks in large part to problematic controls that won't satisfy serious simmers or casual fliers, overly long shoot-'em-up missions, and some serious technical glitches.

We hitch a lift with the head producer of the helicopter combat sim to see how the game is coming along ahead of its summer release.

By Staff, GameSpot UK

When the snappily titled Enemy Engaged: KAH-66 Comanche Versus Ka-52 Hokum was released back in 2000, it received some pretty good scores and won GameSpot's simulation of the year award.

Nearly seven years after that game's release, G2 Games is applying the finishing touches to Enemy Engaged 2. In preparation for its planned launch next month, we got together with Uros Rogulja, the head producer for the game.
