Assassin's Creed 2 Release Set For Tuesday; Game Industry Looking to Recover
Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-16 17:30:05 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]
By Michael Barkoviak @ DailyTech
Just one week after the record-breaking launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 helped kickstart the holiday shopping season, Ubisoft plans to release Assassin's Creed 2 on Tuesday at midnight.
Specifically, Ubisoft designed the second game to offer even more mission and objective flexibility, additional characters and NPCs, and new character development. The game itself has players work their through an environment similar to the Italian Renaissance, with a realistic portrayal of the 15th century, according to Ubisoft.
The second "Assassin's Creed" game is expected to be one of the most popular games this holiday season, but isn't expected to launch with the same enthusiasm as CoD. The first version of "Assassin's Creed" has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide in 2007, with the sequel entering development immediately after the first game's release.
Assassin's Creed 2 will be available tomorrow for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 game consoles, with a PC game launch expected early next year.
The video game industry has struggled as of late, but November could prove to be a good month for the industry. Assassin's Creed 2 is expected to be the second of three highly anticipated games to launch during the month. The final anticipated game title is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a Nintendo Wii exclusive, which should also help generate spending among Wii owners.
The video game industry made $21.3 billion last year, and depending on the popularity of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it's possible the 2009 industry tally could be from $20 billion to $21 billion.

Sometimes Sean "The Saboteur" Devlin needs to mix things up. Sure, it's fun to subtly plant explosives on a tower, but where's the instant gratification? No, for that, he'll need to snag that rocket launcher and take down a blimp or ambush a dock full of Nazis.
Inspired by the real-life exploits of Special Operations Executive agent and French Resistance ally William Grover-Williams, Pandemic's World War II stealth-action game The Saboteur hits PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on December 8.

Just Cause 2 "The Grapple" Mini Doc Released
Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-10 16:33:48 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]
Tethering soldiers to passing jet fighters and using decapitated statue heads as wrecking balls… the development team behind the action-packed Just Cause 2 explains why Rico’s all-new integrated grappling hook is the must-have Agency accessory.
Taking grapple gameplay to its logical conclusion, Just Cause 2 packs a punch quite like no other with the upgraded grappling hook. Permanently mounted on the player’s left arm and instantly available at the click of a button, the grapple can be used to reel in to objects and quickly traverse the world. Grapple to buildings to scale the tallest tower, to vehicles to catch an escaping target or use it in conjunction with the parachute to ‘slingshot’ across the island in seconds. The grapple is also far more than a navigation tool: fully integrated into gameplay, it can be used to seize objects in the world and pull them towards you. Soldiers can be plucked from their high vantage points or out of passing vehicles only to plummet to their doom; barrels and explosive gas canisters can be dragged and dropped upon military road blocks. But the fun really begins with the unique ‘double-tether’ ability: soldiers can be attached to each other, to buildings and roofs, to passing planes and helicopters; vehicles can be tethered to buildings or each other allowing for a quick getaway when they’re in hot pursuit; and destruction from vehicles and statues can be tethered to helicopters for the ultimate in wrecking balls.

"The Saboteur" Hands-on Preview - New Trailer & Screens
Posted by Donster on: 2009-10-21 17:12:59 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]
Why Pandemic's vintage sandbox shooter is the Inglourious Basterds of World War II games.
By Alec Meer, IGN UK
The Saboteur does everything wrong. It shows a reckless disregard for historical fact, it doesn't think there's anything wrong with bloody shootouts in graveyards or the revered Parisian catacombs, it has an Irish guy as the lynchpin of the French resistance, it's full of seedy titillation, and its lead character ranks amongst entertainment history's least convincing Irish accents: file alongside Officer O'Hara in the '60s Batman TV show. You've probably already seen a video or two and thought "uh-oh." That it's coming out in early December, after the Winter games retail rush, even suggests it's been pushed into a graveyard slot. Oh dear. Except... from the few hours we've spent hands on with Pandemic's open-world World War II shooter, it looks as though there's something rather special hiding underneath this desperate-for-attention surface.

Ubisoft Montreal's open-world sequel hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 17, with the once-simultaneous PC edition now slated to arrive during early 2010.

Assassin's Creed III Could Have WWII Setting

"We've had discussions" about WWII, female Assassin, says developer
By Andy Robinson @ CVG
Ubisoft has "had discussions" about setting the next Assassin's Creed game in World War II - with a female assassin.
Speaking to Xbox World 360 in its latest issue, producer Sébastien Puel said it would make sense for a Woman to do the dirty work in the female-run economies of WWII-era France and England.
"We've had discussions on that very topic," Puel said when quizzed on the possibility of a female assassin. "It could be really interesting but we'd need to find the right time period and place for that.
"Where would that make sense? We don't want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero as the first inspiration is always the time period, but if you're talking about, say, World War II the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting.

We talk to Pandemic art director Chris Hunt about the sights and sounds of 1940s Paris.
By Staff, GameSpot
Later this year, Pandemic Studios will look to show that there's still room for creativity in the World War II genre when it releases The Saboteur, an open-world action game set in Nazi-occupied Paris. Perhaps no feature is more unique than the game's overall look, which begins in black and white and then slowly fills in with color as you restore civilian morale throughout Paris and a few other European locales. We recently spoke with art director Chris Hunt to get a few creative insights into the development and settings, as well as look at protagonist Sean Devlin's hideout, the Belle de Nuit.
