War of the Vikings Announces Shieldmaiden Mini-Expansion

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-16 14:47:25 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]

History’s Toughest Women Added to Close-combat Game; Customization Options Available via DLC

Paradox Interactive has announced the addition of female characters to War of the Vikings, the close quarter combat game developed by Fatshark. The “Shieldmaiden” mini-expansion adds the highly anticipated option to play as female combatants in a new pre-defined class for both the Viking and Saxon factions, with designs inspired by history and real-world accounts of brave warrior women, and comes at no cost to all players. This update launches alongside a new DLC package that adds a wealth of customization options to the new female warriors – absurd and nonsensical ‘boob armor’ not included. Owners of the of the Blood Eagle and Valhalla editions of the game will have this customization DLC already included, base game owners can purchase the customization DLC for $4.99.

The Shieldmaiden mini-expansion for War of the Vikings also gives all players access to new maps, new weapons, and the ability to use a female face for all existing classes.

“Out of all of the research and study that went into designing War of the Vikings, the history surrounding shieldmaidens was some of the most fascinating and controversial,” said Gordon Van Dyke, Executive Producer for Paradox’s War series. “Our design reflects the preparations that any warrior, male or female, would have made for battle: practical protection, not sexualized fantasy. We’ve saved the physics for the combat, where it belongs.”

Developed by Fatshark, War of the Vikings brings the next generation of close-quarter combat games to Viking Age England, allowing players to conquest across the British shores as fierce Vikings – or defend them as stalwart Saxons. With skill-based combat, authentic historical weaponry and environments, and a variety of game modes, War of the Vikings will test players’ mettle and determine who is worthy of entry to Valhalla.

Source: Blue's News

Ubisoft announces the Blackbeard's Wrath DLC for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has been released for the Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 editions of the stealth sequel, while the patches for the PS3 and PS4 editions are expected Wednesday. Here's word on the DLC, which is included in season passes:

Three new characters join the hunt, Blackbeard, the Jaguar and The Orchid, each character bringing their unique skill set to battle for the title of best assassin.

Blackbeard, wielding a sword and a short temper is not to be trifled with. His reputation as a feared pirate is justly received and his preferred kill moves include using his tremendous strength to throw his targets off balance and then quickly finishing them with one clean strike.

The Orchid, a Templar-friendly deadly assassin grew up in China, serving as a military advisor in the Quing dynasty where she honed her murderous skills. She executes opponents swiftly and gracefully with her katana, an extension of her mind and body.

The Jaguar, Cuali, an Aztec warrior from Mexico, took to the sea to fight against the Spanish conquest of Central America. A fighter, he survived the destruction of his community and joined forces with a growing contingency of native Templars who sought renewed peace and order. Driven by a mystical force, The Jaguar fights like his namesake, striking swiftly and quietly with his preferred weapon, a discreet axe.

All three characters are available in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag multiplayer, where they will join the hunt for survival.

Currently available in Beta via Steam Early Access, War of the Vikings will appear for free in every Steam member’s library from December 5, 2013 until December 8, 2013. Players can purchase War of the Vikings in Early Access to keep playing after the weekend is over and enjoy the game up to and beyond its official release. War of the Vikings can be downloaded via Steam.

Players who decide to try their hand at the game's skill-based combat will also have a chance to see a new gameplay mode, “Conquest.” The new content update is available now, celebrating the start of the Free to Play Weekend. For more information, please visit the Paradox Interactive Forum.

Warriors brave enough to keep playing War of the Vikings after the free weekend will not only gain access to the javelins (available now), but can also look forward to a new weapon category in the form of the trusty spear due to arrive in our largest update yet thus far War of the Vikings. Combatants facing these new weapons will have to quickly rethink their defensive strategies, as javelins can instantly pierce through shields while spears can force opponents backwards. These abilities become even more dangerous on an all-new cliff-side map, which challenges players to fight their way from the beach all the way up to a monastery atop a high cliff. The new map supports Team Deathmatch, Arena, and the new Conquest game modes. In addition, a new “Battle Chatter” system is being added on a limited basis, letting certain characters respond audibly to in-game events. Characters will call out thanks to their teammates when revived, or warn allies of incoming archer fire – or simply bellow angrily at their enemies.

A new trailer highlights the game's latest features as it displays War of the Vikings in glorious, visceral motion. After protecting your screen against blood-spatter, you can find the trailer here here. (Hosted by YouTube - 0:52)

Review: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Posted by Donster on: 2013-11-22 14:43:22 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]

What do we do with a drunken sailor? STAB THEM!

By Adam Tingle @ Strategy Informer

The trouble with the ibn-La'Ahad's, the Auditore's, the Kenway's, and the Miles' is that they are absolutely shit at being assassins. For self-confessed members of a shady cult of organised killers, they are rubbish at being just that. Ubisoft would have been better off naming their most senior franchise: 'Parkour Enthusiast's Creed' or even 'Really Clumsy Bastards' Creed' because silent killers these men are definitely not.

In a move that is both pleasing and obvious, this year's installment of Animus century hopping has stepped away from all of that assassin stuff. This time around, you're a pirate. A swashbuckler. A vagabond. Oh sure, you wear the correct uniform, conveniently equip the wrist blades but really? You're about as much of a hired killer as Batman is a real detective.

Ubisoft has announced the North American release of the Windows PC edition of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the latest installment in Ubisoft's stealthy action series. Owners of NVIDIA graphics cards will want to note the new drivers that are optimized for the game on their systems. Here's a reminder on what this is from the game's official website:

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag begins in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean and ruled the land and seas. These outlaws paralyzed navies, halted international trade, and plundered vast fortunes. They threatened the power structures that ruled Europe, inspired the imaginations of millions, and left a legacy that still endures.

War of the Vikings Adds Blood Eagle Update to Early Access

Posted by Donster on: 2013-11-09 06:19:49 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]

New Maps, Bloodier Vikings, and Weapon Looting Added to Game

Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games and a blood drive participant, has added new advances to the ongoing Early Access program for War of the Vikings, the upcoming close-combat game from Fatshark. The new phase is entitled “Bloðorn,” meaning “Blood Eagle,” and includes new changes to War of the Vikings’ combat system and a gruesome new set of blood effects, along with new in-game maps and profile loadouts. New updates will continue to arrive on a regular basis as the developers work with Early Access players to optimize gameplay, add new features, and expand the title in anticipation of its release date.

The Blood Eagle update turns War of the Vikings’ corpse-riddled battlefields into tactical opportunities with the addition of weapon looting; thrown weapons, melee weapons, and shields can now be collected from fallen warriors in the middle of matches, providing additional combat options for players quick enough to scavenge them. New blood effects have also been added to the game, covering warriors, weapons, and the environment in crimson as the battles rage on. A new arena map, set on a small crag atop a mountain, joins the rotation in this update, as well as the reintroduction of the Monastery map, where Vikings and Saxons will shed blood on sacred grounds. Three new profile loadouts for players to try, complete with new perks and appearances, have also been added into today's update. For full details on the Blood Eagle update, please visit forum.paradoxplaza.com.

War of the Vikings is available through Steam’s Early Access program now via the War of the Vikings Website.

Magicka Finally Fills its Spellbook: Final DLC Chapter Released

Posted by Donster on: 2013-10-31 14:58:52 in category: Action/Action Strategy News [ Print ]

Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games and undisputed spelling champion, today released the very last piece of DLC for Magicka, the best-selling, fast-spelling, and loud-yelling action-misadventure. Since its release in 2011, wizards everywhere have had the chance to enjoy dozens of updates, side-quests, backstories, and a few bits of foreshadowing – but today’s release of “Dungeons & Gargoyles,” marks the final addition. Today, Paradox and the entire Magicka team are officially content with the downloads of their downloadable content.

Magicka: Dungeons & Gargolyes caps off the original Magicka tale by continuing and concluding the fan-favorite Dungeons & Daemons expansion. Player-wizards will find themselves stuck in the buried city of Old Aldrheim, searching for a way home while confronted by new creatures and foes, new jokes, and a new tale that explores the fate of the lost town. Paradox does not want to offer too many spoilers, but there’s probably gargoyles in it. Dungeons & Gargoyles is available now for $3.99.

The two-dimensional team from Wizards of the Square Tablet, a Magicka adventure released on iOS and Android early this year, have made their way to the PC in a new release on Steam. Players who purchase Wizards of the Square Tablet for the PC will receive all in-game robes and staves for free, and those items can be transferred to mobile platforms (if the mobile version is already owned) with the use of a Paradox account. The PC version is also cross-platform compatible, enabling the game to now support real-time co-op between PC, iPad, and Android. Wizards of the Square Tablet on PC will be available for $4.99.
