Microsoft Details Features of IE9

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-20 16:38:11 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Bart Salisbury @ Maximum PC

Attendees at Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference in Los Angeles got a sneak preview of IE9 yesterday. From what was presented it’s not really clear what type of personality IE9 will take on.

Ray Ozzie, chief software architect, stated Microsoft want’s IE9 to be “a good balance between things we know and have to do and moving the whole notion of browsing forward.” The task of delivering the “most world class browsing experience we can develop,” he added, has to be done “in the most responsible way.” Which suggests IE9 will be brought into line with existing browser potential, but won’t be pushing any cutting-edge technology.

Changes and improvements are plenty. First off, IE9 will use the Trident rendering engine, running on DirectX instead of GDI. DirectX will shift graphic processing from software to hardware, which will boost the display of graphics and text, and provide smoother rendering of animation and video.

Built Around the Browser, Google's Chrome OS Launches

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-20 16:22:08 in category: Software News [ Print ]

New OS is specifically geared towards the netbook market

By Jason Mick @ DailyTech

A radical new day has dawned for the operating system.

Today Google finally aired its long awaited Chrome Operating System. The operating system was detailed at a press conference starting at 1 p.m. EST, and the open source code was posted online just before the start of the presentation. The new operating system brings a dramatically different look and perspective to the market and just may give Microsoft and OS X some tough competition by reinventing a tired old wheel -- the operating system -- offering the first laptop/desktop OS built around the browser and web applications.

A Google engineer set the mood for the presentation announcing in the introduction, "Chrome is the foundation of everything we’re doing here."

New Firefox 3.6 Beta Aims to Cut Crashes

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-18 16:33:22 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Stephen Shankland @ CNET News

Mozilla released a third beta of Firefox 3.6 on Wednesday, adding stability and performance features, and said it hopes to lock down the code soon for its first release candidate.

The new beta includes a component directory lockdown that makes it harder for other software to meddle with the open-source browser's state by preventing that software from sidling into the same folder as the browser's own components. The result should be fewer crashes, said Mozilla's Johnathan Nightingale in a blog post, and Firefox still is open to third-party extensions via its official add-on mechanism.

The change should improve security, too, added another Mozilla programmer, Vladimir Vukecevic, who wrote in his own blog post that Mozilla is considering bringing the change to Firefox 3.5, too.

Freeware Files: Five Mozilla Jetpack Add-ons to Fuel Your Firefox

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-16 16:55:29 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By David Murphy @ Maximum PC

What, you ask, is Jetpack?

Right now, it's just an add-on for Mozilla Firefox. But it could also represent the future of browser-based extensions as we know it, depending on how much developers can twist and craft this new open framework to their advantage. Unlike normal Firefox add-ons, which require a decently skilled knowledge of Javascript and XUL, Jetpack add-ons use a combination of HTML, CSS, and Javascript to deliver new features and functionality directly through the browser. According to Mozilla, one could theoretically write an easy-to-use Jetpack add-on in "under a dozen lines of code." And the benefit for the casual Web browser? Jetpack add-ons promise universal compatibility with different versions of Firefox and, the kicker, require no browser restart to function.

Windows 7 OEM EULA Excludes Home Builds not for Resale

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-16 16:41:45 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Justin Kerr @ Maximum PC

Whenever we recommend a build list for new systems, we inevitably turn to Windows OEM editions for the OS. They are bit for bit just as powerful as their retail cousins, but may require a bit of telephone tag with Microsoft when upgrading and you were stuck with nobody to call if you need support. Overall the experience wasn't so bad given the discount, but an important, albeit subtle change in the Windows 7 EULA could permanently alter this recommendation. The specific clause found in prior OEM editions of Windows is as follows:

"OEM system builder software packs are intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY. They are not intended for distribution to end users. Unless the end user is actually assembling his/her own PC, in which case, that end user is considered a system builder as well."

Rumor Mill: Google Chrome OS To Launch Within A Week

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-13 16:30:21 in category: Software News [ Print ]

Source: Maximum PC

We almost made it halfway through November without a Chrome OS rumor, and if the latest inside tip turns out to be true, the oft talked about OS will launch next week so we never have to hear another related rumor again.

At least, that's the word coming from Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch, who says a "reliable" birdie told him we'll all be able to download the lean OS within a week. When and if that does happen, expect sketchy driver support, as Google engineers continue to work around the clock building hardware drivers. Or, according to other rumors, it will be up to hardware manufacturers to get their drivers in line. Whichever the case might be, expected a bit of busted support out of the box.

TechCrunch says the launch will probably be a cautious one in terms of which platform the OS supports. Netbooks will be the most obvious candidates, and it's unlikely Google will tout Chrome as being ready for notebooks and desktops in general. The search-giant-gone-OS-developer might even list specific makes and models that Chrome is known to work with.

Study: Firefox is the Most Vulnerable Browser

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-10 16:13:08 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Paul Lilly @ Maximum PC

It turns out our favorite browser might also be the most susceptible to security breaches. According to application security vendor Cenzic, Firefox leads the way in terms of total vulnerabilities, accounting for 44 percent of all browser vulnerabilities reported in the first half of 2009.

Coming in second is Apple's Safari browser, which accounted for 35 percent. And what about everyone's favorite whipping browser, Internet Explorer? A comparatively low 15 percent. The Opera faithful will be stoked to learn that their favorite browser was the least vulnerable of the bunch with just a 6 percent share.

Firefox 3.5.5 Update Fixes Critical Security Bug

Source: LifeHacker

There's nothing terribly exciting to speak of in today's Firefox 3.5.5 update; from the looks of the tiny changelog, it looks like one critical security fix and a few other minor bug fixes will make their way to your browser. Mozilla should officially announce the update to Firefox 3.5.5 sometime later today — they're currently hard at work pushing the Firefox 3.5.5 update to their servers. Once they've got their ducks in a row, you can download the update directly from Mozilla here (7.70 MB). If you're in no rush to update manually, Firefox should prompt you for an update in the next day or two.

NPD: Windows 7 Sales 234% Higher Than Vista's First Few Days

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-06 16:20:05 in category: Software News [ Print ]

Initial sales of Microsoft’s Windows 7 boxed software surpassed those of Vista’s first few days on the U.S. market, according to leading market research company, The NPD Group.

According to NPD’s weekly tracking service, Windows 7 software unit sales in the U.S. were 234 percent higher than Vista’s first few days of sales. Revenue growth wasn’t as strong though. A combination of early discounts on pre-sales and a lack of promotional activity for the Ultimate version resulted in dollar sales that were 82 percent higher than Vista.

“Microsoft’s program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.”

Has Windows 7 Already Lost to Mac OS X?

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-02 17:20:06 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Paul Lilly @ MaximumPC

This one's sure to ruffle a few feathers, but according to the latest data from Net Applications, the launch of Windows 7 hasn't done anything to slow down Mac's record rise in market share.

Of course, we're only talking about a 5.27 percent of the OS market, which doesn't come anywhere close to Windows, which dominates the scene with a 92.52 percent share. Still, Mac fans will be quick to point out that Mac OS X still managed to reach a new hgh, and did so amid a heavy marketing campaign for Windows 7 accompanied by temporary deep discounts.

Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 Now Available for Download

Posted by Donster on: 2009-11-02 17:14:07 in category: Software News [ Print ]

Thanks ComputerWorld

Mozilla late on Friday released the first beta of Firefox 3.6, a minor upgrade slated to wrap up later this year.

Delayed by over two weeks as developers closed out last-minute bugs, including one that pushed the release back by several days last week, Firefox 3.6 Beta contains relatively few visible changes from June 2009's Firefox 3.5. Instead, most of the enhancements have been made to under-the-hood components, including the TraceMonkey JavaScript rendering engine.

Among the new features visible to users is integrated support for the scaled-down browser skins dubbed "Personas" by Mozilla, and new warnings to users when they reach a site that calls on outdated plug-ins, such as Adobe's Flash Player or Apple's QuickTime.

Opera 10's Turbo Mode Proves to Be Hit, Scores Almost 3 Million Users

New feature is popular among users in a variety of scenarios

By Jason Mick @ DailyTech

While Firefox and Internet Explorer earn most of the news and publicity, smaller browsers like Google Chrome and Opera are quietly earning more marketshare. Norwegian-based Opera recently debuted a new browser, Opera 10, which brought improved speed compatibility, and some innovative built-in features.

Among the most popular of the new browser's features is Opera Turbo. The feature uses server-side compression to deliver webpages faster on slow connections. It can compress webpages 3 to 4 times, reducing transfer size by up to 80 percent in some cases. Turbo is located in the lower left-hand corner of Opera 10 and is turned on with a click.

Windows 7 Upgrades Crash and Burn

Posted by Donster on: 2009-10-26 16:14:32 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Aharon Etengoff @ TG Daily

An unknown number of users have reportedly experienced serious difficulties migrating from Vista to Windows 7. Problems range from erroneously invalid product keys to endless reboot loops, which often prevent either operating system from loading.

Indeed, one Windows user named Manjigani complained that the attempted upgrade had left his system in "limbo."

"My upgrade failed in last step. And now it is in continuous loop," wrote Manjigani in a post on Microsoft's official forum. "I let it run overnight hoping that it will fix itself, but no luck. I really don't want to go back and install Vista and then go to Windows 7."

Before Upgrading to Windows 7, Grab This!

Save time. Grab the must have Ninite!

By Tuan Nguyen @ Tom's Hardware

I've been using Windows 7 on my home PC for several weeks now, and recently installed the 64-bit release version. I must say that Microsoft has done a very good job with Windows 7. From major changes to minor changes, I can confidently say that installing Windows 7 on your XP or Vista computer will give you a strong feeling of rejuvenation. Booting is fast, apps are managed better, and the overall OS is very slick.

But before you upgrade to Windows 7, take a look into a utility called Ninite. The little tool lets you customize all your favorite apps into one monolithic installer. You then download the package, and run the install. Ninite will install all the apps you picked without fuss. Walk away. Enjoy some coffee, and when you come back, all your apps are ready to go. There's no need to manually hunt for them again.

Mozilla pushes for fast move to Firefox 3.6

Posted by Donster on: 2009-10-21 15:50:48 in category: Software News [ Print ]

By Stephen Shankland @ CNET News

Mozilla hopes to classify the upcoming Firefox 3.6 as a minor update, a move that may sound inconsequential but that in fact might have significant repercussions with Firefox users and the speed the open-source browser is developed.

Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox, in a mailing list discussion that he'd like to call the new version a minor release "to quickly migrate our user base to Firefox 3.6." Minor releases in the past typically have been steps from, for example, 3.5.3 to 3.5.4, but Mozilla is trying to speed up more significant changes and not just fixes for bugs and security holes.

"Firefox 3.6 will be primarily a release with security, stability, speed and capability enhancements, with no visible user interface changes over Firefox 3.5. As such, I think we should consider it as a candidate for a minor update, stretching our definition of what types of updates we can provide using that mechanism," Beltzner said.

One of Windows 7's most talked about features gets finalized

When debating what version to buy, one of the most compelling features of the Professional and Ultimates versions is Windows XP Mode. XP Mode runs using Microsoft's Virtual PC software, but unlike many virtual machines, it blends unobtrusively into your desktop, with XP-compatibility Windows happily living alongside Windows 7 windows, with no obtrusive differences.

Microsoft made an exciting announcement yesterday -- the Windows XP Mode has finally hit RTM (Windows 7 hit RTM several weeks ago.). The finalized version close resembles the Windows XP Mode Release Candidate, which aired in August.
