Review: ASRock Z77 OC Formula Motherboard - Living In The Fast Lane
Posted by Donster on: 2013-01-17 14:59:40 in category: Motherboards [ Print ]
By Ian Cutress @ AnandTech
Enthusiasts and speed freaks are always looking for an edge – a little something that will help push their gear that little bit faster. There is already a market for pre-overclocked GPUs and now SSDs are coming with internal RAID to push the boat over the SATA connections. These require little-to-no knowledge of overclocking and are essentially plug and play. When it comes to pushing GPUs higher, and motherboards, we get a dichotomous nature of ‘easy to OC’ against ‘advanced options to push the limits’. In order to meet these two markets, the top four motherboard manufacturers have all come out with their respective weapons for Z77 and Ivy Bridge, aiming for either ~$220 or ~$380, and all of them have broken overclocking records at one stage or another since their release. First up on our battle bridge is the ASRock Z77 OC Formula, designed by ASRock’s in-house overclocker Nick Shih, and commands a paltry $240 for all the goodies.

Review: ASRock X79 Extreme11 Motherboard

By Ian Cutress @ AnandTech
The end of summer marks the start of the X79 refresh line. We are, at best estimates, coming up to half-way in the Sandy Bridge-E life as the top of the line processor range before Ivy Bridge-E comes to market. Both chips will be expected to run on X79 and the next chipset. But in the meantime, manufacturers are coming up with ways to reinvigorate their X79 line up. So insert ASRock, and the ASRock X79 Extreme11. This motherboard comes with two PLX PEX 8747 chips, making up to 72 PCIe lanes available. This are split into 64 for the PCIe slots (x16/x16/x16/x16 capable), and eight are directed to an LSI SAS 2308 PCIe 3.0 chip, which allows RAID 0, 1 and 10 on eight SATA ports, for a peak throughput of up to 4.0 GBps from eight drives in RAID-0. In the car industry, there is a large variety of cars to choose from - both the cheap and the expensive will get you from A to B, but in various amounts of luxury, with different engines and features under the hood. In comparison the motherboard industry, we have nothing like this - products are built to specifications and have to remain price competitive. Very rarely do we get a price competitive motherboard with a ton of features that also stretches the wallet in the same way a luxury car might do. For this analogy, we have the P8Z77-V Premium from ASUS to review, which comes in at $450 MSRP, but features Thunderbolt connectivity, dual Intel NIC, an onboard 32GB mSATA SSD, a PLX chip for 4-way PCIe devices, onboard WiFi, Bluetooth, and extra SATA/USB ports.

A Second Wind for ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI and Biostar
By Ian Cutress @ AnandTech
Ever since the launch of the Bulldozer range and 9-series motherboards, the initial reviews of the processors were not encouraging to say the least. Since then, AMD has decided to pull out of the enthusiast end of the CPU market, to focus in on the mainstream and low power processors. This is despite the fact that Windows 7 (and Windows 8, natively) is now receiving updates so the operating system can understand the processor architecture a little better, and hopefully boost performance. This gives a second wind to those owning (or thinking of owning) a Bulldozer based processor, and in turn, a 900-series motherboard. With the updates in hand, today we are looking at five 990FX boards that may feature on the consumer or system builders’ radar.

Over the past 12 months I have covered a number of ECS boards, from the Sandy Bridge and Fusion range, including one with a Hydra chip. Looking back on those, there was a distinct running theme – a willingness to offer the consumer perhaps something different. My tour of the ECS headquarters back in June, and a Q&A session with an ECS VP, gave credence to ECS pushing more into the consumer market rather than their roots in OEM. X79 was a focus for this, and today we are seeing the fruits of that perseverance, in the X79R-AX (Black Extreme) motherboard.

Review: GIGABYTE G1.Sniper Motherboard
Posted by Donster on: 2011-03-14 16:06:29 in category: Motherboards [ Print ]
Author: Victor Mikhaltsevich @ Bjorn3D
GIGABYTE targets the G1.Sniper at the gaming market. With 3-way SLI/CrossFire support and an ATX form factor, this motherboard can serve as a valuable contribution to practically any gaming rig. A dedicated audio solution and LAN Network Processing Unit are not only designed in order to free the third PCI-E slot for an additonal card, but also to reduce the workload of the central processor in order to improve overall performance. The quality of components does not seem to fall far from GA-XA57-UD7, which implies that this motherboard has all of the functionality observed in other high end X58 motherboards. The Dual-BIOS, 2 oz. copper PCB (twice the copper in both power and ground layers of the PCB), dual CPU power, and driver MOSFETs all suggest that this motherboard is a secure station for overclocking. Let's go deeper in and see what the G1.Sniper has to offer.

Review: Asus Crosshair IV Extreme AMD 890FX Motherboard

By Joel Hruska @ HotHardware
One of the unfortunate consequences of AMD's inability to match Intel's performance at the ultra high-end of the CPU market over the past few years is that there's been a substantial decline in the number of high-end AMD motherboards. NewEgg presently stocks just two AMD motherboards in the $200-$300 price range compared to 36 Intel products. That's not to imply that you have to pay $200 or more for a quality motherboard but it clearly implies that when motherboard manufacturers are thinking about enthusiasts, they're also thinking about Santa Clara. With one exception.
Both of the $200+ AMD boards are built by Asus and the company recently sent us its top-end AMD offering. The motherboard's retail price point of $299 dwarfs anything else anyone offers in an AMD flavor these days, but Asus has packed the Crosshair IV Extreme with every goody you can think of...

Today the turn goes to the folks from ECS who put out some serious kit on the market. ECS was also working on a few of these P67 motherboards and is making sure that both NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards work combined together. Yep, they are adding a Lucid Hydra chip like some of the competition is doing as well. Anyway, the offering tested today is the P67H2-A socket LGA 1155 motherboard which is powered by a 14-phase VRM. An absolutely lovely to look at motherboard as this is a serious design you guys.

Today's tested product is by all means that, creative. A P67 motherboard from ASUS which comes with that new uEFI BIOS which has been discussed so much. It's the TUF Sabertooth P67 from ASUS, designed with a plastic shroud based on aerodynamics. Review: ASUS Rampage III Formula Motherboard
Posted by Donster on: 2010-12-24 14:01:55 in category: Motherboards [ Print ]
By ccokeman @ Overclockers Club
One of the premier overclocking motherboards to be released in the past year was the Rampage III Extreme. This board built a performance reputation in the enthusiast community with its overclocking abilities but did not make any friends when it came to pricing. It seemingly did everything well. Excellent CPU overclocks, excellent memory compatibility and overclocking abilities from the start. Not to mention the BIOS updates that built upon those abilities as time has gone by. When you have such a board, your market is the extreme overclocker which in all honesty is still a pretty small percentage of the potential buyers. That's where the Rampage III Formula comes in. The Rampage III Formula is a full featured motherboard with all of the looks and most of the features of its higher priced cousin. In addition to all of the ROG specific features such as ROG Connect, Probelt and Dual BIOS chips, you get USB 3.0 and SATA 6 Gb/s connectivity. You get all of this including the appealing black and red themed board for a more palatable price point. This board is targeted for the hardcore gamer and overclocker and if looks alone were the selling point, ASUS would have a winner. But unfortunately looks are only part of the equation. The other and most important part is the level of performance and how well and easily it responds to a little massaging of the clock speeds. Let's see how it compares to several other boards in its class.
