Review: Cooler Master Storm Scout II Advanced Mid-Tower Case

Falling Behind the Curve

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

Cooler Master has been fairly gung ho on the PR side about their Storm Scout II Advanced. While we missed the opportunity to review its predecessor, the Storm Scout II, we aim to rectify that omission by putting this new semi-portable ATX chassis through its paces. Cooler Master has a long history of strong enthusiast offerings (with their HAF line being particularly well loved), but does the Storm Scout II Advanced inherit that legacy of greatness or are they falling behind the curve?

Review: Rosewill Armor EVO Mid-Tower Case

Posted by Donster on: 2013-01-25 15:31:17 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

Sometimes Performance Isn't Everything

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

As NewEgg's house brand, Rosewill has been growing in very interesting ways. Being the house brand of a major electronics retailer means dipping your toe into a lot of different markets, and Rosewill has expanded dramatically, to the point where their products are starting to crop up on other vendors' sites. At the same time, those products are gaining attention in their own right. Rosewill's own Thor v2 may not be the best built enclosure, but it's a dynamite performer and can oftentimes be found at a bargain.

Rosewill has also been fairly aggressive about pursuing enthusiasts. It's not enough to simply have a product and offer it; you don't see Best Buy sending out Dynex or Insignia televisions to websites for review. There's also sweet money to be had in chasing mid-to-high end buyers, and that's where the Armor EVO comes in. The EVO is a fairly modestly sized tower capable of supporting E-ATX motherboards and promises healthy cooling performance. It also comes with an unusually optimistic MSRP: $119. Is it worth the money, or did Rosewill misfire?

Review: NZXT Phantom 630 Case: The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection

Posted by Donster on: 2013-01-21 15:03:12 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

It wasn't that long ago that we reviewed NZXT's shiny new Phantom 820, a case that apart from its high price tag and slightly ostentatious design was pretty tough to beat. The Phantom 820 was providing some best-in-class thermal and acoustic performance, and it was a shot fired squarely across the bows of companies like Thermaltake and CoolerMaster, whose respective Level 10 GT and Cosmos II suddenly had a new, less expensive case to worry about competing with. Yet when I visited NZXT at CES 2013, they already had a descendant of the 820 on hand.

The Phantom 630 is just a little smaller, a little more conservative, and a lot cheaper. At $179 MSRP it's still on the expensive side and is clearly an enthusiast case, but unlike the 820, the 630 is using an entirely new chassis built from the ground up. The 820 scored a Bronze Editor's Choice award, but as it turns out, it may not have been a flash in the pan. Once you take a look at the 630, you'll start to understand why I'm beginning to think NZXT is entering a new era and the competition needs to be on their toes.

Cougar may be a brand familiar to Europeans but North American gamers may not have heard of this company and the products they offer. The new Cougar Challenger mid tower case definitely shows a distinct personality which makes it standout compared to other mid tower cases. The case's bold styling really makes it stand out, the front cover in particular has an aggressive design that would feel equally at home as the front of a starship or as a character in a Transformer movie. Today we will review it to help you make that decision.

Review: Cougar Evolution Full-Tower Chassis

Posted by Donster on: 2012-07-17 15:45:37 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Vincent Petronio @ PureOC

Today we're looking at the Cougar Evolution, a full tower case which comes with a bunch of features such as tool-less retention, USB 3.0 ports, built-in 2-channel fan control, good cable management opportunities, and a competitive price tag of $90.

Cougar may not be a well known name in the case industry, but the company appears to be targeting the more budget-conscious consumer, as the Evolution is very well priced for a full-tower. It's certainly not as advanced as many of the established manufacturers in the premium case segment, but it's got some strong potential for those who need space, and perhaps may not need the fancy bells and whistles; there's something to be said about a solid, practical, and well-priced tower to house your gear.

Review: Thermaltake Armor Revo Snow Edition Full Tower Chassis

Posted by Donster on: 2012-06-05 16:59:08 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By red1776 @ Overclockers Club

When you have been around the block a few times like I have (that's my choice of euphemism for getting old), you get to see how most everything is cyclical. I have ties whose width has gone in and out of fashion three times. My first car is now only seen once in a great while on the streets, and then only with collectors' plates attached. The Vikings are also about due to win another...well there is the exception that proves the rule. It was a scant twenty years ago that personal computers for most of us were like Ford Model 'T's – available in any color....as long as it was black , and in the case of PC enclosures, white. It was called "computer white" and was somewhere between champagne and eggshell. It was an off white that was the result of recycling milk jugs, blister packs, and just about any body part of the Pontiac Feiro if memory serves. When case manufactures started putting out more exotic colored cases, people abandoned the white case in droves with great enthusiasm. Well...now the white is back in force. Folks are clamoring for snow white versions of their favorite case and even if you cannot find one now, you probably will in a week. Such is the case with the Thermaltake enclosure I have sitting on my bench this week. The thing I have found with white color schemes is that it can have the effect of making a decent case look gimmicky. Recently, Thermaltake has turned out a 'Snow Edition' version of their Armor Revo case and has been on a roll with their case offerings. Let's see if they have designed another winner here, or if it's good Knight Revo (that's a pun you will get in a minute).

Review: Corsair Obsidian 550D Mid-Tower Quiet Case

Posted by Donster on: 2012-03-29 16:35:25 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

We've been keeping track of the evolution of Corsair's line of enclosures since the Graphite 600T was released. Even as the newer enclosures generally found themselves lower and lower in price, there was a clear evolution as Corsair's engineers gained more experience and confidence with their designs. Yet each new design up to this point has been a little bit of refinement and a little bit of experimentation without any specific specialization. That changes with the 550D.

There's definitely some experimentation going on here, and there has to be: the Corsair Obsidian 550D is the first case Corsair has engineered specifically for silent running. That's not all they've experimented with, though, as you'll soon see. Read on to see how the 550D handles our new and improved case benchmark suite, and if it can actually fill the role of a PC that's seen and not heard.

Review: SilverStone Temjin TJ04-E Mid-Tower Case

Posted by Donster on: 2012-02-10 14:42:17 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

The overwhelming majority of cases from SilverStone we've reviewed so far have been based on some very unorthodox designs, featuring layouts that feel ATX in name only. Yet when we visited with them at CES and they showed off the Temjin TJ04-E, we were surprised: at least superficially, the TJ04-E looked like a garden variety ATX case. It had SilverStone's usual clean lines and style, but everything seemed almost too normal. Thankfully we have the Temjin TJ04-E in house today, and while it may indeed look fairly by-the-book at first glance, SilverStone's mad scientists have tweaked quite a few things beneath the surface.

Review: Enermax Fulmo Mid-Tower Case

By Clayton Milam @ PureOC

The Enermax Fulmo lineup carries one behemoth capable of housing two massive power supplies and an HPTX motherboard, and also one modestly-sized mid tower case. It is the latter we'll be looking at today.

Enermax is probably not best known for their case designs; rather, they’re very renowned for their power supplies, but they have produced several cases, and we've seen them to be typically rather garish creations. We're not fans of the outlandish, but the Fulmo is a distinct trend to the opposite; it's quite tasteful, and we're rather fond of the new restrained styling shown by Enermax.

Let's take a closer look at the Enermax Fulmo and see if it's a successful move for Enermax.

Review: Nexus Prominent R Silent Mid-Tower Case

Posted by Donster on: 2011-12-29 15:20:52 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

Author: Michael Peters @ Bjorn3D

When it comes to cases there are many choices. Finding the right case for a system, and environment, is a matter of looking at what they system will be used for, and what is required for the environment it will be used in. For example, a high end, overclocked gaming system would want a case with massive airflow, and since the sound system would overpower the fans as far as noise goes, sound proofing would not be an issue. On the other hand if the system is used in say, a music studio, or other environment where low noise levels are a necessity, then the user would want a case that reduces noise levels. But as we all know, it would also have to keep the components of the system cool.

Enter the NEXUS Prominent R, a case that includes many features the modern system can take advantage of, as well as built in sound absorption panels.

Does it make a real difference? Can it still keep a system cool enough? Are the features what consumers are looking for? Over the next few pages we will find the answers to these questions and more.

By Stuart Davidson @ Hardware Heaven

In the system component marketplace few areas are more crowded than cases with hundreds of manufacturers across the globe competing for consumers. Review: Corsair Carbide 500R Mid-Tower Case

Posted by Donster on: 2011-10-25 15:48:15 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

Corsair seems to have completed their case lineup with their latest addition, the Carbide 500R. Though currently made available in black, this enthusiast-geared enclosure was originally advertised in its attractive pearl white coloring, and that's the model we have on hand today. Does this powered up Carbide 400R have what it takes to make it as a compelling alternative to not just its cheaper sibling, but also to Corsair's Graphite 600T and 650D as well as the other enclosures around the $139 price point?

Review: Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper Full Tower Gaming Chassis

Posted by Donster on: 2011-09-29 16:30:51 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Tony Walker @ ProClockers

Today, Cooler Master is introducing a case under the Storm branding, the likes of which offers several features no other cases in its class does. Support for multi-rad setups, up to fourteen storage drives and 4-way GPU configurations are just a few of the goodies that we will be looking at during this review session. Should that somehow not be enough then there is still the styling to mention, tastefully done in a way that isn’t over-the-top and is subtle enough to be used as a workstation, but ideal for that all-out gaming rig.

Posted by Donster on: 2011-09-01 16:36:54 in category: General System Component News [ Print ]

By Dustin Sklavos @ AnandTech

The last time we checked out an NZXT enclosure, we saw in their H2 a lot of fantastic ideas done in by a single poor design choice.
