Intel Sheds Some Light on Core i7 Derivative Branding
Posted by Donster on: 2009-06-17 15:46:12 in category: Processor News [ Print ]
By Cyril Kowaliski @ The Tech Report
The rumor mill has been calling upcoming Lynnfield processors "Core i5" for some time now, but at Computex, Intel's Francois Piednoel told us rumors about the name were wrong. Other sources indicated that the chips would be branded Core i7, while future dual-core, 32nm Westmere CPUs would be called Core i5.
Intel Corporate Communications Manager Bill Calder has now clarified the situation in a blog post about Intel's new branding initiatives. Apparently, the truth lies somewhere in between.

Four Cores For The Power Consumption Of Two
By Patrick Schmid & Achim Roos @ THG
Intel’s Core i7 processor family has been available for a few months now, but despite being the undisputed performance champion, it is not yet ready for the true mainstream. Processors, and especially motherboards, are still too expensive; and the existing models deliver their impressive performance at equivalently impressive power consumption figures. But users looking for the best balance between performance and efficiency have an interesting new option now: Intel has released its first 45 nm Core 2 Quad processors that stay below a specified power consumption of 65 W--the Core 2 Quad S series.

Retail Core i7 CPUs More Powerful than Originally Reported

If you’ve tried to research the differences between Intel’s top-end Core i7-965 Extreme Edition and the midrange 940 and budget 920 parts, you’re probably as confused as us. And we even have direct access to Intel. But the technical differences between these parts are enormously important for system builders when you consider the price disparity -- $1000 for a Core i7-965 compared to under $300 for a Core i7-920.
What we do know is that the Core i7-965 has unlocked multipliers going up and down (although we have to point out that we have not seen any motherboards with multipliers that let you actually set it higher. You can only do that by increasing the Turbo Mode ratio.)

Author: Anand Lal Shimpi @ Anandtech
Two years ago we previewed Intel's 'Conroe' core and to our surprise it blew away its closest competitor by 20 - 30% easily. Today, Intel is without competition at the high end but that hasn't stopped it from topping its performance by 20 - 50% with its brand new architecture. Intel's Nehalem processor is due out at the end of this year but we previewed its performance today and were very impressed; if you thought 'Penryn' was fast, just wait until you see Nehalem.
