Video: Wolfenstein: The New Order Censored Version Comparison

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-22 17:32:41 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

By Tom Phillips @ Eurogamer

Wolfenstein: The New Order is the first title in the series to be granted an official release in Germany - not surprising, really, when you consider that the use of Nazi imagery and slogans has been restricted in the country for over 60 years.

Swastikas and other Nazi images aren't banned in TV and movies, but video games are a different case as the German government doesn't class them as art in the same way.

Even then, game characters can still be portrayed as Nazis (as they were in Call of Duty 2, for example) although The New Order goes a step further and replaces references to the Nazis as simply 'The Reigime'.

Meanwhile, the game's international version - the one released here in the UK - has been geo-locked on PC so it can't be played within Germany itself.

How much of an impact does this all really make? Eurogamer's YouTube editor Ian Higton has been recording his playthrough of the game to find out.

Fair warning - the video below doesn't show any pivotal plot moments but it does include sections of gameplay from throughout the campaign, just in case you want to remain spoiler-free. There's a fair amount of violence, too.

Wolfenstein: The New Order Technical Issues

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-20 16:46:40 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

By Chris Thursten @ PCGamer

We've only had access to Wolfenstein: The New Order since this morning, so our full review of the game won't be available until Friday this week. I'm writing this now because we've all encountered technical issues with the PC version that warrant a warning for early adopters. I didn't encounter any of these problems when playing earlier PC builds of the game, but those sessions took place in publisher-controlled environments. That said, several of the issues seem to be related to graphics drivers - suggesting that recent updates might have thrown a spanner in the works.

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-16 15:19:23 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Bohemia Interactive, the creators of the award-winning Arma® series and DayZ®, are proud to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Founded in May 1999, Bohemia Interactive released its debut title Arma: Cold War Assault (originally released as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis*) in 2001, and has since then developed more than 15 games and expansions. The studio’s birthday celebration is accompanied by an Arma 3 Free Weekend and a Bohemia Interactive Weekend Sale on Steam, plus a free game for everyone.

From 15th May until 18th May, all Steam users are able to play Arma 3 for free, with access to all content except for the second and third campaign episode. Those who would like to continue playing afterwards can pick up Arma 3 with a massive 40% discount. Bohemia Interactive’s other released games are also on sale – and while the studio does not usually offer discounts on its Early Access games, for its 15th anniversary Bohemia Interactive made a special exception, and has included DayZ and Take On Mars in the sale with a fitting 15% discount.

Furthermore, as a birthday gift for everyone, Arma: Cold War Assault – Bohemia Interactive’s debut title – is available for free from now until the end of the weekend, and will stay in people’s Steam Library afterwards - providing them with the opportunity to experience where it all began.

In addition to the free game, Bohemia Interactive today also announced that people who have previously bought a non-Steam version of Arma 2, including the expansions and DLC, are now able to redeem their product on Steam using their original Arma 2 or Arma 2 expansion game’s CD Key (often found inside the box or provided by the reseller via e-mail).

Last but not least, Bohemia Interactive published a brand new video. Looking back at 15 years of making games, the 15th Anniversary video showcases the games which the studio has developed during the past one and a half decade. For the people who are interesting in learning even more about the studio’s background and future direction, Bohemia interactive also deployed a new company brochure.

"I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to the amazing 15 years at Bohemia Interactive. The journey so far has been exciting, often challenging, sometimes hard - but, ultimately, always rewarding”, said Marek Spanel, CEO and co-founder of Bohemia Interactive. "While the games industry has fundamentally changed since the early years, our community continues to stand at the heart of everything we do, and together we will continue to create incredible games."

Heroes & Generals - Largest Content Update to Date

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-08 16:16:01 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Heroes & Generals - Patton Update "9 New Goddamned Tanks!" Trailer

Reto-Moto has just released the largest content-update to date, for their persistent WWII MMO-shooter Heroes & Generals.

The new update, codenamed ‘Patton’, doubles the amount of tanks by adding 9 new tanks, expanding the arsenal of war-machines to a total of 15 tanks, 3 tank-destroyers, plus 12 other vehicles ranging from fighter planes, reconnaissance vehicles, off-road cars and half-tracks to motorcycles and even bikes!

“This is the largest and most ambitious update we have made for Heroes & Generals since we went into open beta last year. " said Jacob Andersen, Game Director at Reto-Moto "The community has been screaming out for more tanks, so it feels fantastic to double the amount with the Patton update.”

The new personal vehicle loadouts enables all characters to have their own set of upgradeable vehicles. For infantry the vehicles are off-road cars, motorcycles and half-tracks, for recon soldiers the vehicles are motorcycles and armored reconnaissance vehicles, for fighter pilots it’s fighter planes and for tank crews naturally tanks and tank destroyers.

“By introducing personal vehicle loadouts, where characters can own and upgrade the vehicles of their choice, and at the same time offer players to play as infantry, tanker, pilot and even as a General commanding the troops, I believe that we have something very unique compared to other online wargames.” added Andersen.

The currently available upgrades for the vehicles are anti-tank- and supply crates for supporting infantry and coming updates will provide more kinds of upgrades such as camouflage, engine upgrades, different types of tank tracks, and special ammunition.

The Patton update also adds 2 new weapons: the US M3 'Grease Gun' and the German MP-34 as entry level submachine guns.

A new mechanism for spotting enemies has also seen the light of day in this update and a new introductory flow has been added for new players to ease their way into the game.

On Advanced Warfare Realism and Sledghammer's Cancelled Game

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-06 16:18:04 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Source: Blue's News

GameInformer.com previews coverage of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare from their upcoming cover story on Sledgehammer's futuristic shooter sequel. They talk a little about the reasons for the new setting, and explain the emphasis being placed on realism, even though it is set almost 40 years from now. Here's word on that:

"Advanced Warfare is the newest universe in Call of Duty, and it begins in 2052. Former Dead Space developers Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey (along with their talented team at Sledgehammer Games) have carried out an exhaustive level of research on future weaponry and technology, attempting to make their solo debut as authentic as possible. They’ve consulted with the government, futurists, and scientists to ensure that Advanced Warfare is a realistic vision of our future rather than a lazy collection of robots and lasers."

There's also more from that article on MP1st where they got their hands on the print issue where Sledgehammer discusses some of the history of the project, saying part of the reason Sledgehammer bosses parted EA out of fear of "franchise fatigue." Oddly, in light of that concern, they quote Glen Schofield saying their cancelled game in a Vietnam setting was "definitely going for some Dead Space moments." Finally, GameSpot has parlayed its investment in the magazine into a preview of the game. They say this is running on an unspecified engine, that Sledgehammer is handling the Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 editions, and that the game takes a global counter-terrorism theme. There's also a description of a Crysis-style exosuit: "You'll earn points every mission that can be used to upgrade your EXO suit. Using the EXO suit, you can climb walls with magnetic gloves, boost-dodge toward cover, perform super-jumps that let you get to higher ground, use optic camouflage for cloaking, and hover in mid-air."

In the most extreme effort to comply with Germany's regulations, they are also attempting to circumvent Germans (and Austrians) from importing the game, saying: "PC versions will be geo-locked so that they cannot be activated within Germany." They also clarify at the end that no one should think that they are condoning genocide by making this game, which is comforting.

Bohemia Interactive Presents 2014-2015 Roadmap for Arma 3

Posted by Donster on: 2014-05-02 15:56:00 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Bohemia Interactive today released their 2014-2015 development roadmap for Arma 3. In a brand new post on Bohemia Interactive’s devblog, Arma 3’s Creative Director Jay Crowe and Project Lead Joris-Jan van ‘t Land explain the studio’s intention to support the game with platform updates, downloadable content, and an expansion.

Platform updates are major enhancements to Arma 3, and will be available to everyone who own the game. Extending the Steam Workshop implementation (currently limited to player-created scenarios) to support mods is a key goal. Another important addition to Arma 3 will be the release of the Bootcamp update. This free package will give newcomers a varied introduction to the game, while veteran players can look forward to refinements of certain vanilla features.

Besides platform updates, Bohemia Interactive will also reinforce Arma 3 with downloadable content (DLC). Each exploring a specific theme, Arma 3 DLC will focus upon new sandbox assets, official scenarios, and features. Bohemia Interactive stipulates that DLC game features will be free to everyone, while DLC content will be paid. The studio is currently working on a plan to prevent a split in the multiplayer player-base, which will be explained in more detail in the next few weeks.

Bohemia Interactive's first planned DLC is Arma 3 Helicopters, which is scheduled for release in the second half of 2014. The Helicopters DLC should feature new transport helicopters, an option to use Take On Helicopter’s RotorLib Flight Dynamics Model (FDM), plus several new game mechanics. The Helicopters DLC will be followed up by the Arma 3 Marksmen DLC, which should include new weapons and a focused overhaul of certain shooting mechanics.

The studio is also developing a major expansion for Arma 3, which is currently penciled in for late 2015. While much of the pre-production work for the expansion is still underway, the intention is to deliver a range of new sandbox content and features alongside a new terrain - which offers a distinctive feeling and gameplay.

Last but not least, the devblog post mentions that work on stability and optimizations, as well as large-scale MP performance, will continue. Together with the scheduled platform updates, downloadable content, the expansion, and the €500,000 Make Arma Not War contest - Bohemia Interactive intends to develop Arma 3 as a long-term platform.

By Chris Scullion, Games Editor, CVG UK

Infinity Ward has released a new Call Of Duty: Ghosts title update on Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. As well as the usual array of bug fixes and tweaks, the latest patch adds a new Chaos variant to Extinction.

Chaos was originally introduced as a variant to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Spec Ops mode. In it, players face off against a never-ending deluge of enemies and must chain together kills to earn power-ups that will help them stem the tide.

It has yet to be confirmed when these changes will be implemented to the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game. Click here for the full list of changes.

New Arma 3 Video Guide Explores Zeus DLC

Posted by Donster on: 2014-04-24 16:17:39 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Bohemia Interactive today deployed a brand new episode in official Community Guide video series for Arma 3™. Taking a closer look at the recently released Arma 3 Zeus DLC, Andrew Gluck (better known as Dslyecxi) from Shack Tactical provides some practical tips for both Game Masters and players.

In Arma 3 Zeus, which is now available as free DLC for Arma 3, players can take on the role of Game Master, and curate the multiplayer experience of other players – much similar to the concept of popular tabletop games such as ‘Dungeons & Dragons’. The new Community Guide explores Arma 3 Zeus’ potential, while highlighting some of the core capabilities of a Game Master, and alternative uses for the Zeus module.

"Zeus represents a significant step forward in the Arma series' development. By making it possible for any player - even those without previous mission-making experience - to design and evolve a scenario in real-time through a robust 3D editor, Zeus lays the tremendous sandbox potential of the game out in easy reach, ready to be used as a tool to craft dynamic, engaging, and memorable experiences for all involved", said Andrew Gluck, former servicemember and leader of the popular Arma community group Shack Tactical.

Charlie Brooker to Appear in Sniper Elite 3

Posted by Donster on: 2014-04-17 13:11:51 in category: First-Person Shooter News [ Print ]

Who Shot Charlie Brooker?

British satirist, screenwriter and broadcaster Charlie Brooker is set to appear in Sniper Elite 3 as a character the general public will be able to shoot in a specially created level. Charlie Brooker, a vocal fan of the tactical World War Two shooter series, was invited to visit games developer Rebellion’s studios to see first-hand how the game was created.

After a tour of Rebellion and 2000AD’s Oxford headquarters, and a hands-on session with Sniper Elite 3, the studio’s Creative Director Jason Kingsley proposed a novel ‘thank you’ to the television star for being a long time champion of the title – the chance to have his likeness, movement and voice appear in the game.

Charlie Brooker took Rebellion’s Sniper Elite 3 team up on the offer of appearing in one of his favourite games and put on a full body Lycra suit covered in tiny balls for an intense motion-capture session to act out the movements of several characters.

Rebellion is keeping quiet on Charlie Brooker’s exact role in Sniper Elite 3 for now, but the games creators have promised it will appeal to Charlie’s dark sense of humour, fuelling speculation he won’t just be the good guy.

An unapologetic gamer and a former video games journalist, Charlie Brooker most recently endeared himself to the gaming community with primetime Channel 4 documentary Videogames Changed the World which featured footage from Rebellion’s award-winning Sniper Elite: V2, a game he described in The Guardian as “The Rolls Royce of sniping games”.

As Rebellion founder and creative director Jason Kingsley explains, having such a high profile fan was too good an opportunity to miss:

“You can buy endorsement all you want, but gamers can tell the difference between a genuine fan and a celeb that is happy to get a payday”

“At one stage it seemed like Charlie mentioned Sniper Elite every few weeks in his Guardian columns and we’re incredibly grateful for his support, so this seemed like the perfect way to say ‘thanks’. It was also a great opportunity to reward our team who have worked so hard to get the game ready for its launch in June and we really appreciate Charlie championing a British-made game series. We had a fun time doing his motion capture scenes and in return have promised to give him one of the first copies of the game in June so he can shoot his character with a sniper rifle to his heart’s content.”
