We take a look at Beta 1 of Microsoft's next major operating system.

While Windows XP was a major and basically necessary upgrade for users of Windows 9X (even Windows 2000), Microsoft has been promising for some time now that its next operating system would be an even bigger upgrade, possibly the biggest it's ever released. While Microsoft has had to scale back a few of the features it originally planned to include in the OS, like a database-oriented file system, there are quite a few new things to Windows Vista, previously codenamed Longhorn, that will change the ways users access files, navigate their system and generally use their computer.
