Contrary to what Intel roadmaps had previously indicated, Intel today officially announced the Intel Core 2 Quad processor. The Core 2 Quadro moniker that was designated earlier appears to have been changed at the last minute, as launch material from late September 2006 claimed the official product name would be Core 2 Quadro.

Intel's Core 2 Quad processor will officially launch in Q1'07, dubbed the Q6600 processor. The Kentsfield Xeon X3210 and X3220 are expected to launch in Q1’07 as well. DailyTech also previously explored the performance of Intel’s upcoming Core 2 Quad Q6600.

In mid-November of this year, the company will announce its first quad-core desktop CPU—the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 clocked at 2.66 GHz. Intel is also expected to launch its quad-core Xeon Clovertown 5300 series around the same time frame. All of Intel’s quad-core Kentsfield and Clovertown will be equipped with 2x4MB of L2 cache.
