The New Millenium
By Kurt 'Froglips' Giesselman

E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, in Los Angles was a wonderland of new hardware and software, either new or soon-to-be released. It was also an eye opening experience for me as I look forward to where the industry is headed in the near future.

Before I get on my soapbox about the future of entertainment, let me review some of the new and exciting hardware and software that will be making an appearance in 2000. In my newly appointed role as hardware editor, we will start with graphics cards.

The buzz continues to be who will win the video card wars. In the coming months we will test the latest and greatest in a wide range of combat simulations. Who cares if the card will run 80 fps in Quake III? From the Battle of Britain to B-17 II, Falcon 4.0 to Flanker 2.5, Longbow II to IL-2, and anything else we can find, we will tell you how your favorite simulation will run on the latest and greatest.

This year's E3 witnessed two of the current video powerhouses of the gaming community duke it out: 3Dfx and nVidia were both showing off their newest technology. nVidia brought 32MB versions of their GeForce 2 GTS and some wild demos to show off what it could do. In my travels throughout the show, I asked every game developer what kind of hardware they were running their games on. I have to admit the GeForce 256 32MB appeared to be the card of choice at E3. The Voodoo5 cards are not currently available and the nVidia powered GeForce 2 GTS are just hitting the street.
