Even simmers so devoted that they have permanent goggle marks around their eyes will, on occasion, kick back and play an adventure or action game. Real word stuff like Rainbow Six or Hidden & Dangerous do not constitute a fall from grace for those who usually demand the most accurate of flight models. Even slightly over-the-top shooters like Deus Ex can be enjoyed if played in a closet.

No matter how serious a flight sim gamer you are, sometimes, when you play a strat game or shooter, you just hit a wall and can't progress. Try as you might, you just can’t crawl inside the twisted head of the game designer and figure out what to do next. You can spoof every kind of air-to-air missle but you can't figure out how to get past that sentry around the corner who seems omnipotent. There must be a trick, but who has four hours to spend on this nonsense when Mig Alley awaits? Enough already! How do you take this guy out?

Fast, Fast Relief

The opening screen shows the cheats you already have.

Players can spend hours haunting the Web and posting to news groups but the wait involved can still be long. For $19.99, InterAct Accessories gives us the GameShark utility. This neat little package will search the Web for any hint, discussion, tip or cheat for the widest variety of games from Rainbow Six to (shudder) Squad Leader. Invoking the package brings up a list of pre-loaded cheats for dozens of games. While this list may suffice, the outstanding feature of GameShark is its web site. Here, updates and news abound. Virtually, all new games can be found in their alphabetical listing. If your brand of headache isn’t there, the search mechanism will scan the web for you and bring up information in categories of tips, cheat codes and discussion boards. The codes are explained in depth and can be downloaded with a click.

Gameshark's web site can yield many insights.

Playing Through
Once the code is downloaded, it can be brought up through the GameShark’s interface. Clicking on the code launches the game using that code. Therefore, if you were running out of ammo hitting that bunker, your saved game file will be brought up with your guys overflowing with cartridges.

From this screen, the game can be launched with cheats activated.

GameShark is a nice utility for the gamer in a hurry. Armed with the required and provided Internet Explorer 5.0, adventure, action and role-playing games need no longer be treks into the Forbidden Land of Designer Minds but the fun romps of imagination they should be.
