Matrox G400 MAX

2D Performance

2D performance on the Matrox G400 is superb! I don't know of another product that sports a RAMDAC this fast, and combined with UltraSharp DAC technology and support for true 24-bit color up to 2048 x 1536, where else are you going to find performance like this? Naturally, the 256-bit DualBus power is also showing here.

CPU Limited

About the only disclaimer that needs to be tossed in here is that the G400 shows a preference for fast CPUs. If you are running less than a PII 400, you would be just as well off with TNT2 Ultra or Voodoo 3 3000. Move beyond that, up into the 500MHz or Pentium III ballpark, and you will be ready to soar with the G400 MAX.

Why is this so? Triangle setup is not done exclusively by the G400 chip, whereas the TNT2 and Voodoo3 do 100% of the triangle setup. Since the CPU takes part in the pre-rendering process, the faster the CPU the better!

Installation and Documentation

Install was a snap, but would not have been if I had followed my usual instincts. Be certain to follow the instructions included and you won't have any difficulties.

I ran the list of simulations noted below left, and all ran flawlessly. The first time we tested the G400 we had problems with MiG Alley, which ran fine on both TNT2 and Voodoo3 at the time. This time around things were different.

The documentation included is adequate, but just barely. The manual included is a scant 18 pages, but three of these pages are index and six are dedicated to trouble shooting. This is a surprising omission given that the board is feature rich and you will simply have to experiment with some features to get them working the way they are supposed to.
