Classified Interviews: 1997-1999
by Leonard "the Knife" Hjalmarson and Benny "the Nuke" Thomson

Back in the fall of 1997 we took the opportunity to do a clandestine interview with an SH "mole," who will remain anonymous. Benny "the Nuke" was assigned to that interview, and after two years in the hospital following a mysterious explosion, we sent Benny to meet with an anonymous defector.. er, informant, from JANE'S Combat Simulations group. We begin with the famous interview of 1997.

Q: Is F4 real and will we see it this fall?

SH: (taking a long drag on his cigarette, which glowed red in the dim light..) Oh yes, I can assure you IT is real...

Q: Why has SH been so secretive through the development process?

SH: Well, you have to understand that we are developing the most advanced simulation ever attempted on the PC. We intend to raise the bar higher than any developer has ever done, INCLUDING those scum at JANES.... We will integrate the most recent technical advances in every area: 3d hardware, voice communications, virtual reality stuff, command interface, AI modules, terrain and weather modeling, etc.

Q: I understand that a previous person in your position who gave an unauthorized interview mysteriously quite Spectrum Holobyte...?

SH: (leaning back, smiling) No, he didn't quit, he simply DISAPPEARED.

Q: Disappeared? I don't...

SH: This is no game we're playing here you know. We WILL be the best and NO ONE will stop us!!

Q: Ah, sure, no problem... So, the gaming industry can be rather ruthless at times?

SH: Ruthless? You see these scars (rolling up shirt sleeve)... this one is when I asked the Producer for the weekend off.. this one is when I mentioned in a casual conversation to my wife that I would be working on the new ******* features...

Q: Wow. I didn't realize it had gone that far...Kinda reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in, though.

SH: Like I said, we WILL be the best!

Q: Can you give us any inside information on the flight modeling? SH: Naturally, we've used the best in the business. We have some significant military connections, you know. Q. Sure. You mean Pete Bonanni?

SH: How did you get that name?

Q: Er.. I think it was published in PC Gamer a few months back.

SH: (Scribbling furiously in a note pad.) Damn marketing nuts! They'll say anthing for a buck.

Q: Uh.. yeah. Anyway, can you tell us about the new graphics engine?

SH: (turning white) No, I really can't talk about that...

Q: Well, I know that it is NOT Direct3d..

SH: You KNOW that? (leaning forward) Do you realize that your life could be in danger?

Q: Ah, no... well, actually, now that you mention it, I DID get a strange box in the mail this morning. It's right here...

SH: NO, NOOOOOOO....! Ed Note: The rest of the interview was garbled and the disk was blackened by intense heat, only barely readable after some hours of work. We have been attempting to contact Spectrum Holobyte regarding sims in progress but they are not returning calls....
