Taking a poll on whether the forum members
like or dislike the comic book interface,
and why.

I really like the game but hate the comic
book stuff. As I stated in earlier post, the opening animation from Jane's WW II, EAW, and even CFS I are exciting, inspiring, and a promise of adventure to come, while this is lifeless flat mediocre comic drawings. The general interface graphics are quite good, it's just the lame comic book stuff that leaves me cold. Not up to par with what is potentially a great flight sim/game. {IHMO}

While I agree the comic book drawings don't really inspire me I gotta give credit to them for doing something a little more original. War film footage would be nice but predictable and at least the drawings have that the right look for the era. Its not as if its some Dragonball Z Pokemon looking cartoon strip.

And luckily the gameplay speaks volumes. My 2 cents.

I like the premise. Some of the drawings are good; some are really gimpy. I think they're supposed to look the comic books from that era... but not quite.
When I first saw the interface screens in a few preview articles, I figured they were trying to emulate the drawings from some pilot's sketchbook. Now that I have the game, I can see that they're not that... I kind of wish they would have leaned more toward something like that. Maybe actually using drawings and notes from real journals.

Can't stand it, but it's not a big deal for me. I'm slowly replacing the screens that appear most often with period photographs.

The comic stip thing looks vaguely period-like in the sense it resembles something produced in the 40s for consumption by eight year olds.

I like it, nice change. Especially for those of us who read Weird War, Sgt Rock and another one about a tank with Gen Robert Lee as it protector (forgot name!)comic book's as kid's.

Love it. Its one of the things that attracted me to it. That and I buy most MS stuff, just for its flexibility.

I'm not so much turned off by the style as I am by the fact that those dern movies come between the pilot screen and the briefings of the hardest missions in the game. It pisses me off, when I've already been spread all over the pacific in flaming chunks, to wait for the movie to re-load and tell me I'm probably going to die soon. Since your wing men are hardley up to the task of intelligently pursuing mission goals, you have to be a hero, and put yourself at risk to win (yeah that's the ticket... ).

I don't mind the interface but I think they should have added real footage at least on the plane information section. They did such a beautiful job on many details and it would be great to see real movies and compare the planes. About the intro, it could have been much better even if still based on cartoons but it just sucks. I only watched it once and I regret it. It's just not interesting.

I really like it. If I wanted to look at a bunch of historical photographs I'd buy a book. I think it is a refreshing change.

Hate it. Well, maybe not hate it, but certainly loathe it.

I give the designers an A for effort and originality, but I dont care for it. I like the mix of comic book and reality in the manual. I wish they had kept that mix for the game interface. I dont understand how you can rip apart these flights sims for their historical inaccuracies and then in the same breath say but I love its cartoon feel . It is not a show stopper, but I hope this theme is not repeated.

Yes, this is really an interesting point. I just got the box today actually and first impression about it is rather kidding. But after playing it for 10 minutes, I don't think "kidding" is a good word to describe what I feel about it. The interface is quite relevant to the background of the sim which is being set in the Pacific Theatre in 1940's.

And it's about the US and Japanese, so I would imagine MS is trying a little hard to make it a selling point to attract more sales.

Overally speaking, it's quite a new attempt and I am sure this is an appreciated marketing effort.

Remember, EAW also features an European rich User Interface.

hate it. i like the military-looking ones better. I want to see ready rooms, etc. I want real briefings and debriefing. I want what every other guy who came over here and gave everything he had once, for our country to love us as much as we love it - that's what i want.

I don't mind it really. It would not have been my first choice. As long as the action is good when I press "fly now" I can overlook a lot.
Well done to the dev team, and to Microsoft for publishing this sim.

I like it, even if im more in favor of interface with a more military look, i like it because i think its original, with a nice "melange" of funny and dramatic. Some times you start to get tired of interface than looks all alike.

good hunting.

I would have liked it better if they included some gun camera footage to wet my appetite. I want to compare this game to actual camera footage, I have a feeling it's not too far off on the damage being modeled.

Period photographs and military posters from both sides would have been better. The sim is good but the graphics in the interface are starting to get old for me.

...of course Microsofts sells a lot of products in Japan - so you got to soften the military touch if you are doing an aerial game. Smart marketing.
