So there I was, in my trusty Emil, just wasted 2 Hurricanes on their way home and made a third fill his pants, then dodged the flak as two more chased me out to sea. Now I'm on my way home and I bring up the map, and jam the 'P','P','P' cause I'm low on gas and I want the direct line right into the runway. Now with the last waypoint pointing directly at my base, I hit hyperspace, and
WHAMMO!!! I get auto-driven right into the runway!

Beware this! Always leave that last dogleg on your waypoints for the approach. The stupid autopilot cannot handle super-quick landings in hyperspace and will plow you into the runway.

Real disappointment!!!

Ah well, now for my very first career as an American! Y'all mine if I carry this nickel-plated .45? Muh gran'daddy did give it to me when I got on the boat!

Thanks for the info, Gavin. I was having that same problem with the Typhoons at Biggen Hill. Flying back on 'wing leveller' and 8x speed still took a long time but now I know what the problem is, I might be able to fly more missions.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but which key is the "hyperspace" key, and does one use it in conjunction with another key/s to fast track back to base/the leg just prior to the final approach/run-in?

Hyperspace key is "ALT N" which means skip to next encounter (or waypoint). What Gavin did was to go to the map "ALT M" when flying to look at his waypoints. Clicking on the "P" seems to delete some of the waypoints on the route home. If you delete too many waypoints, like he and I were doing, the plane does not stop a few miles away from the airfield so you can take control but it actually encounters the runway at whatever speed it is flying at - it goes splat, BOOM.
