Now that I've gotten the hang of downloading skins (not all of us are quite adept at this computer stuff), I'm torn between leaving the allied bombers with their original green color, or giving them the metalic look. All the movies I've seen portray B-17s in green. When did these bombers begin flying metalic? This query is for the sake of game authenticity. Thanks.

Natural metal duralmin or "silver" USAAF planes began appearing in all theaters of the war from about Spring 1944. The powers-that-be decided that, as Allied air superiority was by the time a given, camouflaging aircraft was a redundant waste of valuable time and effort both in the aircraft plants and in the field, and rescinded orders requiring that all military aircraft be given the standard Olive Drab/Neutral gray paint scheme. Aircraft arrived from the plants at supply depots/assembly areas/etc. in natural metal finish, and any paint beyond that was left up to the discretion of individual unit commanders at the Group level and up. Many units, perhaps most notably the famed 56th Fighter Group (Zemke's Wolfpack) used wildly non-regulation camo schemes using mixtures of USAAF and RAF paint stock (a lot of Brit paint was lying around in the hangars just itching to be used, apparently) both as practical camouflage and as a symbol of unit elan up to and shortly after the end of the war.

Hope that helped.

p.s. Airbuddha, Major Lee and others have some excellent 56TH FG skins, if you are interested in these colorful and distinctive finishes.

The silver birds are pretty, but there are some nice green ones for download, too. Airbuddha' site has a pretty green B-17 and B-24 (as well as nice silver ones too) and Fox2 has a nice green B-26 with nose art an invasion stripes. The bombers look great in silver or green, but the green that came with the original EAW out of the box was ugly and one-dimensional.
