And don't scoff ('All Russian - of course he got 352'). He often had to shoot down Sturmovik ground attack planes, which would require your entire ammunition supply to down on many occasions, and was the most armoured aircraft ever built, to my knowledge!

Best story from 'Blonde Knight...'(Biography of Hartmann)?

The Germans were having no end of grief with the Russian cold (yeah, tell that to the guys at Stalingrad). They couldn't get the 109's hot enough to start on those cold Russian mornings. One day, they captured a Russian pilot who was shot down near the base. After treating him nicely, they were rewarded by some great, and typically Russian advice. Seems the Russians had the same problem, and had solved it by sticking cut-off barrels of oil under the noses of their planes! Each morning before a mission, the ground crew would trudge out to the planes and light the oil in the barrels, giving the nose and engine a nice toasting! The Germans at first laughed, and probably thought this was an attempt at sabotage, but they gave it a cautious trial, and IT WORKED!

From then on, they would warm up their planes with the barrels of lighted oil, thanks to one very friendly Russian pilot!
