Guess you might not want to do it once you know how. The .DML file is the model file which describe amongst many other elements, the frame of the a/c. I mean it's damn sophisticated.

Maybe just play around with the .AIR and .DP files. Try adding bombs to imported a/c. I still cannot figure it out though alots of information is ther already!

Sounds about right. I'm thinking about the creation of new models, though. Is there an app which can do this?

Yes. Go to combatfs.com. There is a Tutorial in which it mentions some sort of 3D tools. But they are very hard to use apparently according to the author of the article.
