A little known fact: In 1940 Mitsubishi actually delayed production of the G4M1 Betty bomber in favour of the G6M1 heavy escort fighter version with additional cannon armament. Thirty were produced but the concept was unsucessful and most were modified to G6M1-K trainers or G6M-L2 paratroop transports.

Defies belief almost, but maybe the Betty was actually capable of 'chucking itself around' a bit. Go figure.

No I don't think it could chuck itself around.

The G6M1 was conceived as a stop gap. The Navy Type 96 attack bombers did not have an escort that could follow them deep into China and thus bomber losses were heavy. The G6M1 was seen as a possible solution to be used as a gun platform.

The G6M1 differed from the G4M1 in these ways:

The bomb-bay was faired over and a ventral gondola was mounted with 1 20mm cannon firing forward and 1 20mm cannon firing rearward. The 2 7.7mm Type 92 machine guns in the waist were replaced with a single 20mm cannon that could be fired from either side. The dorsal machine gun blister was removed. Ammunition capacity was increased dramatically, however this increased the weight of the aircraft by enough that the performance was hurt and the G6M1 was slower than its G4M1 counterpart.

The G6M1 was designed to be a wing-tip escort and to really just sit there slug it out with fighters. It was in no way supposed to dogfight with them.
