I am playing the campaign for the US. I had just completed mission 7. This is the one just after Midway where you escort the bombers to destroy the two damaged Japanese Capitol ships. Anyway on the mission after that you pretty much do the same thing with two different ships. I get to the ships and shoot at them for a while until I see that the bombers are doing their job and then as soon as I can I bug out. Notice that when you arrive at the ships you only have 14% fuel left. Then you fly around for a few minutes and leave. But you have to fly 190+ miles back to base. Needless to say you are not going to make with that little fuel.

So first go around I went in the drink. Second time I went to Player aircraft settings and changed the load out to guns and long range. Now when I flew the mission my plane was the only one equiped with drop tanks. I completed the mission, but was suprised when all of my wingman made it back to base since none of them had drop tanks.

So do the AI aircraft have fuel limits? I know they can run out of ammo, but what about fuel. And why wouldn't my loadout have been preconfigured to long range. This is the first mission where I had to change the loadout in order to complete.

Did anyone else run into this?

Are you switching your fuel tanks during flight. I only just discovered this tiny detail yesterday. I guess, depending on the plane, there are at least three different tanks to choose from. One runs dry, switch to another one.
