I am appaled at the decision of Microprose for cancelling the AH-1 in their upcoming game Gunship! The AH-1 has been completly overlooked in the helicopter sim world. Shure, the Apache is nice, but is way too over-used. I am sick of it! Being the son of a Cobra pilot, this issue is exteremely important to me. The Cobra is a great helicopter and needs to be recognized!

Definatly! I mean, the Cobra is the father of all attack helo's in the world! If it wasn't for this modified huey, there wouldn't even be an Apache!

I'd love to fire that three barreled 20 millimeter gun at a croud of fleeing grunts. Or steer a TOW 2 missile into a T-72's turret. Where would a battlefield be without some Marine AH-1S'?

yse they need somthing that models the cobra, it would fit in with some of the newer choppers if they use the AH-1z variant.

There was similar discussion on jet forum. The idea was to stop making(for now)F16,F15,F18, and consider other planes. I like apache sims, but having something new for a change, would be great. For eq. naval chopper, hunting subs. With ability to fly, search the subs using sonar scopes, fire torbedos.

Well, that would be boring if realistically modeled. I mean there's not much threat out there for ASW choppers... operating so close to the ships and all..

Gimme DA SNAKE!!!!

But, you could also take out an aircraft carrier with whole bunch of planes and choppers. And on a way back a nuclear sub. And do this to your friends, who fly jets and attack choppers.

Back in the day when LB2 was first released... there used to be a flight-sim newsgroup where everyone liked each other and got along....

Anyway, when LB2 was released, I had just finished reading a book called 'Low Level Hell' about Scout pilots and Cobra gunships that I felt would have been an excellent model for a Helo Sim. Just as in LB2 where you could fly 3 different helo's, here would be the OH-6 as a scout, the UH-1 troop transport, and the venerable AH-1 as the gunship, with Vietnam as the backdrop.

Now if only someone could the Janes of old to give this some thought.

Dave

I heard some rumors that tank platoon3 is gonna upgrade gunship! with a cobra chopper
also it will feature a wire guided missile in the tiger chopper
so maybe these goodies will make up for the airstarts :P

Scout, Thanx for the Pic. U R Da Man.
All this talk reminds me of the cancellation of Flying Nightmares 2. Just think we could have had a Cobra and Harrier in the same sim. I remember when I flew GS2000, the Cobra was my favorite. Sure it couldn't carry as much arms as the Apache, but it was a joy to fly.

The Cobra is a capable airframe and it would definitely be nice to see it in a sim, again - perhaps as an addon to Gunship! or C-H.

Keep the faith guys.

Damn, the more I look at that pic the more I want to fly the Cobra. Scout, you did a bad think; I might have problems sleeping now. . Now I'm pumped!

BTW, was that screenie from C-H? If so, maybe Razorworks can give into our demands and create a Cobra add-on.

I think I better stop here. I'm starting to act like a newbie.

Virgin,

Oh, man! Did you have to mention FN2!!! I'll be drinkin' my soul out for a week now!

Just joking... The cancellation was most painful however - having both the Snake AND the Harrier in the same ground-pounding oriented sim is my wet dream. Anyway, I hope some developer sees the signs that are everywhere and makes a decent Harrier sim.

P.S Yep, this screen is from CH. I read somwhere that after CH Razorworks will most likely retire from simulation endevours (sp?) to do some strategy or fantasy title or something. I hope its not true, however I can understand them - it's fun to have a little variety from time to time. I hope that once they done with this fantasy game or whatever they will return to the real deal and make BlackHawk-Hind

Cheers,
Scout

Y'know, if they did decide to branch out they coudl maybe do something that I feel needs to be done. A FPS-RTS ala Battlezone only with current day technology and all the realism of a sim. Why has no one tried this before? I mean they've played aroudn with the idea, but it usually gets or starts out as a watered down sort of sim with more action arcade and no realism whatsoever. Something else I'd like to see is for a company to include tools to edit/add units and models as well as create new missions. Then we'd all get what we wanted

MoZer,

You have a great point there! I think a huge success of "one shot one kill" type of games ala Rainbow Six speaks volumes for this idea. Imaging having your squad doing the night insertion into some Hizbullah-infested village... Your buddy piloting the MH-60, escorted by couple of AH-64Ds piloted by human Pilots/CPGs.

With cable/DSL lines common I forsee that this day will come!

Cheers,
Scout

Oh yeah, and after you finish raisin' hell and dust off - there come a couple of Snakes to clean things up!

I also believe that they should make a helicopter game covering all aspects of the Vietnam War and the missions flown. A great game could be made using the missions flown in 0H-6, Cobras, CH-46, Ch-47, Hueys, and CH-53. I think that the gaming world has looked these helicopters over because of their pre-electronic era.

There is allot of true in what you said about the pre electric area.

MFDs are the big sale item in modern Combat Sims. Analog gauges are hard to make easer for newbie simmers.

I concur on the OH-6 and AH-1s. I want a complete package, Air Assault! Airborne!, Air Cav!

Give me the ability to hit the village as in Apocalypse Now! I will play ride of the Valerie on my home system.

Give me comms with the grunts on the ground.

Gunship cannot do **** with out clearance from the ground, so where is the radio traffic?

I flew on many, many Air Assault insertation s with Cobras tearing **** up a few clicks ahead of our ship. The site is givening me goose bumps just remembering it.

Doesn’t get much better then that!

Gunship is just a turkey shoot sim with little or no ability for squadrons to employ real world tactics.

Still going to buy it though.
