1941: British forces advance into Italian Somaliland in Eastern Africa.

1942: Three German ships, the Gneisenau, the Scharnhorst,(shown above) and the Prinz Eugen, break loose from the port of Brest in France. They run up the English Channel, dodging mines and shoreline artillery, and make it safely to Germany.

President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Josef Stalin sign the Yalta agreement.

1942: Ironically after suffering only minor damage in its daring move up the channel, Gneisenau is hit by a bomb from a british attack on Kiel a few days later, and a fire in the ammunition store puts the ship out of action for the remainder of the war.

1943: Pupils older than 15 is drafted to part time service as assistants at the Luftwaffe ground installations.
Night between 11th and 12th British bombers attack Wilhemshaven
