1945: British forces in Burma manage to reopen the main supply line into southwest China when they free the Burma Road from Japanese control. By holding this key roadway, the British can send supplies overland to China, and thus do not have to rely on the airlift that has been in operation.

1945: Chaing Kai-shek renames the Ledo-Burma Road the Stilwell Road in honor of General Joesph Stilwell.
