I've played EAW strictly single player, but not in a couple of months. I was disappointed to a certain extent by a couple of things. I got tired of the endless waves of German fighters, and the apparrant inaction on the part of the rest of my flight (I started as a junior guy so only controlled my wingman.). I averaged about 10 kills on a mission, and, by ordering my wingman to attack targets, have him get 1 or 2. The other 8-10 fighters in my squadron would get 1 or 2. Plus, I felt guilty watching the flight of (initially) 24 or so bombers gettings torn up until only 4 or 5 made it to the target area, and then, maybe, 1 or 2 get home. I had plenty of missions where none of the bombers survived, but my missions were successful because a couple had made it to the target. While I loved the dog fighting and tactics, I didn't feel that this was in anyway historical. The bombers blazed away and never seemed to get a kill. Then a patch came out that REDUCED the accuracy of the bomber gunners, though I assume, only against player controlled aircraft. Has it gotten any better in this regard?

Which version were you playing? Just straight out of the box? The 1.2 patch improves virtually everything, except for gun effectiveness (killing power), which it way overdoes. There's an easy fix, though, and that's Enemy Coast Ahead 1.4, which, in addition to powering down the guns to realistic levels, adds some flyable plane (Me410, Ju88, Mosquito, B-26 and others), and other features (better FMs). The 1.2 patch enables high resolutions, too, as well as options to increase the numbers of squadrons on yours or the enemy's side.

I've noticed the AI to be "OK" now, not complete idiots. And as a US pilot, I'm disappointed if 16 of 18 bombers make it to the target - it's usually 18 for 18. And I've never got 10 in a mission - my record is seven, and it's only happened a couple of times (Hurricane vs. firecrackers/Stukas, 262 versus B-24's). EAW 1.2 + ECA 1.4 is really a lot of fun. Generally come back with 2 or 3 kills per mission, and the wingnuts do OK, too.

You have to remember that EAW isn't realistic in the number of combats per career - every mission you fly you'll get a chance to fight, which is far, far, far from realistic (esp. if you're an ally). But I think it's great fun.
