I have been flying sims since 1987. I don't fly online and I don't care for "hardcore" type sims. After reading this board for almost a year, I decided to ask the kids for EAW for Xmas and they obliged.
Talk about boring. How many escort missions can you fly? Same old, same old every mission. The mission objectives are the same, the formations are the same, the commands are the same, and so on and so on. The AI aircraft pull some amazing 180's and a few other major problems I see in the FM.
If this is the best of the current crop, then I'm glad I don't have one of the others cause this is BORING and not nearly as immersing and fun as the old AOP.
They could have done so much with this sim and to me it appears they elected to take the easy way out.

and ummmm...most sqns did the same mission types day in and day out ..i mean what do you expect from the BOB scenario

Sims are only as fun as you make them, SmokeOn.

Have you tried strafing any churches or schoolgrounds?

Try other gaming avenues. My wife says flight sims are the most boring thing she's ever done on a computer. I can't get enough of it! I guess it's not for everyone.

I've been flying EAW for almost a year and am not bored one bit. If you don't like flight sims, we can't help. Try Quake II or something like that. Maybe you prefer jet sims. You'll eventually find your niche.

Well, thats how the campaign is in EAW. It can be repetative at times. But, it is more challengeing if you fly and try to make it on one life only.

I suggest, if don't like the EAW setup, try WWII fighters. You don't have to fly the same plane and same mission over and over. And the missions vary greatly. However, you cannot track your carrer.

EAW boring? Think what it must have been like for the actual participants. They didn't get to repaint their planes, change the terrain, and fiddle with all sorts of enhancement software and hardware. I fly only offline (so far) and my latest add-on is a force-feedback stick. Makes it a whole new game! Again! New terrain last week. Who knows what next week. Boring? Go play an arcade game!

EAW is a SIM, not a shoot-em-up arcade game. Ask any Pony pilot how boring it was to drive 500 B17's to Berlin and back. 3 hours of absolute boredom punctuated by 5 minutes of sheer terror. That's reality, and that's a SIM.

Try Aces of the Deep in real-time! Another of the legendary sims out there, but you spend 99% of your time driving around on the water staring at -- water.

The only beef I have along smoke on's lines is that they definitely didn't capture the unpredictability of air warfare in World War 2. A little random number generation thrown in here and there would have ensured you got encounters with different stuff in different locations at different altitudes, and missions every day in intense battle periods, with several missions a day.

Ah well, we all have this vision in our heads of the perfect air combat sim, and no, EAW ain't the holy grail, but it's a damn fun game to me, and the best out there in my humble opinion.

...And it has the best fans.

Well, I was going to respond but Gavin said it better. My only agreement with the intial post would be the silly vertical manuevers the A.I. use.

Smoke, U patch with 1.2 or tried the ECA yet. 1.2 makes the AI better. The AI in EAW is better the most AI in other sims. They at time amaze me with their stupidity and at times with their great flying (sound like real pilots right). As far as the mission goes, well if you are pony driver, then u get about 95% escort duty. Try some diff AC's. If u are German, in 44-45 well guess what, you'll get about 90% intercept mission. Thats what was in 44-45 for fighter pilots. If you fly the Brits you get a good mix depending on the AC u choose.

Turn everything up to max, get into a career, no reflies, & just one life. Tell us how far you get. With patches & add ons, I think that the word would be, frustrating, not boring. Although I do know one gentleman who doesn't like "this" idea of fun. His forte is crash, bash, blood, guts, screams & flashing screens etc. Me thinks it has to do with his attention span.
FWIW,
Good Hunting!
Ps. IMHO, this WW2 sim is the leader of the pack, followed by CFS & then WWII.
PPs. Different strokes for different folks but don't lead with the chin!

Ahem. 90% intercept in 1944-45 isn't as realistic as you guys think it is...

Besides, flying an ACTUAL airplane sure beats the hell out of simming. So a flight over france is dead boring in EAW, but I'd love to have that flight in RL...but from England to Berlin and back...well...

And staying in a sub is different than staring at a screen...

And if you don't care for hardcore sims, you might as well give up EAW, and probably flight sims in general....I doubt flight sims will go back to the old arcade-style...

Go for Quake-ish games. We are realism freaks. Most of us, anyhow.

And one more thing; you have to think about tactics in order to find EAW interesting. In sims like BoB, I just turn around, found a spit, and fired. I then turned some more, found another spit, and fired. Try using E-tactics. Try flying "inferior" planes.

Good point! I remember flying Secret Weapons, which was my favorite flight sim before this one. Unfortunately, due to lack of an exterior or padlock free-view, the stock F key views didn't cut it in a tense close-in dogfight. The only thing that worked was 'stare out the front and turn in circles until something flies in front of you, then level out behind him and kill him'.

In EAW I love how I can hit padlock and have my virtual view swivel and look out the window at the enemy plane, then hit F1 and stare out the front again to turn the plane properly, much closer to the real thing. I also use exterior view extensively, mainly because I love watching the plane fly. To achieve the real thing beyond this, you'd have to be in a flight sim chair that simulated the G-forces, so you could tell the attitude of your plane by how it felt, coupled with a vr helmet to allow you to look with your own kneck muscles.

...And if I'm 60 before they build that, I'll still be trying it out!

You're right Opa. In late '44 and into '45 the attack pilots often flew mission after mission without ever seeing a German plane. EAW does get annoying in that one can never seem to actually get to a target during that time period without getting bounced by an unrealistic number of fighters.
But that's not a biggy, at least for me. Lately I've been doing 1940 missions, usually bf110 against shipping. It's hard to survive, but it's fun running different approaches, etc. In the last few trips I've survived and sunk some ships. There's always something to try...

Don't you find it annoying that the ships don't move, and you can sink one easily with your 20mils?

I tried a convoy attack in a P-47 once, and after sinking 4 ships with my .50cals, I decided to go looking for more realistically modelled targets inland.
