Yes, I know what you mean. It is a good thing the game has substance. I bought it in part because of the volumetric couds and explosions, and play it with the volumetric coulds, explosions and half a dozen other things disabled...

In no particular order:

F-14 Fleet Defender(favorite plane at the time)

Falcon 3.0(realistic avionics, blast to fly)

F-15 by Janes

Flanker 2.0

Falcon 4.0

Back when I started flying...I dunno, I had a Tandy 1000...so 1989(?)...my friend and I played F-19 Retaliator. I hated it. I hated F-15 the original too Why? The graphics weren't like the ones on the box When I got into Falcon 3.0, I thought it was the greatest sim of all time...and instant action was one of the things that got me hooked. Firing 1 bajillion AMRAAMs sigh I would've gotten Tornado, but I thought it was a knockoff of Falcon 3.0. They had virtually the same box art...silver painted plane, on grey box. I also remember Strike Commander...and Secrets of the Luftwaffe...as well as Chuck Yeager's something or other I almost bought B-17 too...but it was too late when Memphis belle had come out...the title was off the shelf by the time I went back to buy it.

This has been another rambling by

I have tallied the responses and they tell as much about what sims are good and what the people who post on this board are like. The sims that gardnered the highest votes won't surprise anyone, classics (or soon to be)...all of them:

Falcon 4.0 - 9 votes
Janes F-15 - 7 votes
Flanker 2.0 - 6 votes
Jane's F/A-18 - 5 votes
Longbow 2 - 4 votes

Honorable mentions go to WWII Fighters, Flight Simulator 2000 and Total Air War with 3 votes each.

No one mentioned EAW or CFS...but maybe its because I placed this post in the Jets section of this board. Also, noticably was the abnsence of any votes for USAF.

What do the 5 say of all of you:

Hardcore to the bone.

I think I beter go find a coy of Jane's F-15. Seems to be a very popular game.

Thanks for your posts.

Yep. That's the one, Sleeper.
The good old LHX...

It was just a joy to play. Funny thing is all the sims they made with that same 3D engine: Su-25, Yeaguer's air combat, Fighter duel...
It looks strange from today's perspective, but at the time it was a nice thing to do: just fly a new bird in a completely new scenario, and don't worry about how to fly the thing; you already know the keys... :-)

I suppose that's what I loved from Flanker 2.0 when I bought it. Same controls as in Flanker 1.x... Could this be a lesson to learn for developers?

Otto

Juan:

Nothing wrong with playing older sims. Been thinking about getting a copy of Hornet Korea or F-15 myself. I understand that they are both very good. As for EF2000, with Thyphoon coming out I guess I'll pass on that for now. Hard to find copies of those over here though.

Hmmm, can I ask you something? Are you an "eye-candy" type of simmer or do yuo insist on realistic flight handling, avionics, etc. Or perhaps you prefer a balance of both? I ask you this because I see you feel the need to try out (Janes') F-15. Well, I was sorely disappointed with this sim because of the apparent lack of attention on the ground detail. Well yes, most of the fighting was over the Arabian/Iraqi desert, but man, it was THE most desolate desert I ever saw in a sim (it even beat JSF's Afghanistan hehehe), like sometimes late at night, I almost fell asleep on the keyboard because of the monotonuos terrain that was scrolling under me endlessly on my screen...hehehe. But if you're not too picky about terrain and such, it has a rock-solid campaign set (but not free of bugs), and it was enjoyable during hectic furballs. But I'm also a civvie flightsim fan, so I really hate it when I cannot see anything on the ground while flying over it Have you USAF? If you ask me, skip F-15 and fly the Eagle in USAF...I think you'll be rewarded better

F-15 is totally different than USAF. Although the graphics may be worse the sim is a lot more sophisticated (the systems, AI, etc.). What kind of planes do you normally like in sims? If you like small, agile, fly by wire planes like the F-16 and F-18 you may be dissapointed at first because the F-15E handles a lot different than them and with the realistic flight model (and even with the less realistic one) the plane is a bitch to handle and can be very frustrating till you get used to it.

Yeah, I guess I was disappointed by the handling, too. As you may have surmised from my sims list, I prefer light, agile jets like the Viper or the Hornet. When I played F-15, everything seemed to be so sluggish, like I was flying a Globemaster or something. Anyway, combat was still intense and rewarding...it was the going back to base that really bored me a bit In other sims, I don't usually use autopilot when going back to base (esp. if you're autopilot is damaged of course hehehe)...if the scenery is mesh-terrain, I really gamble and do very low-altitude ground skims (F-19 of long ago did this to me hehehe) just to admire the ground, or perhaps test what Yeager referred to as "ground effect". When I did THAT in F-15E, I was *smacked* into the dirt in no time...dead. hehehe

Oh, I forgot one other neat sim I used to play, which really forced me to hug the dirt most of the time--Dynamix's A-10 tank Killer! Loved that one oldie too! hehehe

Yes, I agree therefore with you--cannot compare Jane's F-15 with the F-15 in USAF...

There have been a few more posts and the tally now looks like this:

Falcon 4.0 - 10
Flanker 2.0 - 8
Janes's F-15 -8
Jane's F/A-18 - 7
World War II Fighters -5

Longbow and TAW are close with 4 votes each.

In order (to get EF2000 and TAW higher)

1. EF2000
atmosphere never beaten
2. TAW
quite realistick and playable without one year of reading the manual
3. F4
realistic, but I still read the manual :-)
4. USAF
nice graphs, never mind the fm
5. CFS
my only prop sim, not bad at all!

And ot: I read somewhere the question if a 'champaign' mode will be included in Typhoon. I guess only after winning the war! Hehe

1. ef2000. Has anyone beaten its atmosphere yet. And it is still the most fun to play! It has yet to be matched all around.
2. Longbow2
3. F4
4. Flanker1.5
5. Flanker2
6. FA18 Hornet Korea
7. Janes F18
8. TAW

Noncombat:
1. Fly! It has ATC and charts. My ranking wasn't a consious thing either, btw. I usually used MSFS. But I found Fly! in a clearance rack and MSFS never gets booted up. All MSFS is good for(for me) is VFR. It is so annoying having to pause in MSFS to find out FRQ for Nav. In Fly! you just click on the navaid. I could go on and on....
2. MSFS2000
3. FUIII Unlimited. Too limited in terrain.

LongBow2, I got my start on that game and it's every bit as enjoyable today, as it was the day it came out. However, my undying love for the fast movers forces me to mention Janes FA and USAF as well.

I am going to stop tallying after this post.
The top 4 are not chnaging anymore. Longbow 2 and TAW moved up to a tie for 5th, with Jane's WWII Fighter's slipping to 7th.

Falcon 4 - 12
Flanker 2 - 10
Jane's F-15 - 9
Jane's F/A-18 - 8
Longbow 2 - 6
Total Air War - 6

Jane's WWII - 5

I am a bit surpried that EAW did not make it to the top 5. I was also expecting EECH and MiG Alley to fare better, but one is new and the other one still has problems with its multiplayer code.

YOU SAD SIMMERS. every one has missed the real mother of flight sims. For pure gameplay, handling, interfacing, oodles of options and most of all reliability. It's an oldy and the graphics don't come up to much by todays standards --- ACES OVER EUROPE from Dynamix. This game was a true pioneer. Even the likes of falcon 4 can learn a trick or two from this beauty. In fact I wrote to Don Whiteford at DID and tried to get him to implement some of the features into the next EF2000 :-(
All it required was a humble 486 P90.
