Will there ever be another "decent" F-14 sim? What can i say, I'm a serious Tomcat lover who at this point would go to his grave screaming the flight sims reached their apex in 1994 with Fleet Defender Gold. Every so often we hear the rumor of a new F-14 sim coming out, but I've never heard of any of this panning out. And of course there have been its appearances in a few flight sims since then - such as the forgettable Fighter Anthology (that thing doesn't even look like a Tomcat). So has anybody heard anything promising?
Speaking of FD, does anybody know how to get that thing running on a Windows 95 machine (I've been in a bad state of withdrawl since my old computer gotten taken away). I KNOW that this machine (P2/266) meets all of the requirements but I can't get the needed conventional memory (I can get 563 out of 566kb) and the bootdisk approach leads to a now standard lock-up after the intro. Any ideas?

It's sad to say, but it's probably over for the F-14 in flight sims. Its problem is that it never participated in a major war, so whereas the Mustang and Spitfire will live forever in the virtual skies, the Tomcat probably won't. Jane's had the opportunity to give us the last, great Tomcat sim, but we got F/A-18.

I have actually had Fleet Defender running under Windows 95, so don't abandon hope. The first time I tried the bootdisk I got those lock-ups after the intro. Unfortunately I can't remember what I did to solve the problem. I think it may have had something to do with the mouse driver.

Jetfighter 4 will have an F-14 that you can fly.

I think the real issue is the limited scope of the Tomcat's mission profile. Don't get me wrong, Fleet Defender was among my all time favorite sims, and I love the Tomcat. Unfortunately, developers seem to think that the Tomcat is severely limited in it's role. It was designed for fleet defence, recon, and escort. In the Gulf it flew those missioins. The market (WWII sims aside) seems focused on multi-role aircraft.

Frankly, I would love to see someone do a realistic F-14 sim. Think of the multiplayer possibilities (I want to be a RIO ). Still, perhaps SSi could implement an F-14 in their series. It's good to see that they will be adding an A-10 (an aircraft long deservingits own sim).

The sad thing is now the F-14s have more missions than ever in the "Bombcat" role. Sure, it's not their forte, but they CAN do it, just like F-15E's in AA combat, so why not?

Count Me In,

I would only ask that they also up the number of 'incidental/other planes' by letting me fly all the possible era-variant-user profiles. Maybe to include a couple era-generic cockpits so I could 'skip around' (treating the Tomcat as a mini-AWACS).

I would especially luv to play:

Vietnam: 1972-1975, The evacuation, gone hot or the living up to a promise by a President.
Early F-14A. IRST, bright color schemes, A-6, A-7, RA-5,/RF-8, F-4E/J/N/S. Maybe an option on the F401 engine too (28KLbst).

Whoo Babay, it /tickles/...;-)

WWIII SLOCwars-at-Sea: As in the Carrier battles depicted in Tom Clancy's _Red Storm Rising_. We lose Iceland and have to beat down a regiment of Fulcrums. We get 'surround sounded' from Backfires and Decoys.
We fly landed AD in defence of Northern England, including trailing bombers back to their northern Kola bases to pre-time a TLAM strike from the SSN 'wagon train' hovering under the icepack. Debut of the vile Buggster too I suppose.

Iran vs. Iraq, The Barbarian Horde Wars. THIS could be the best of all of them. Start early with Russian Foxbat-RB crossing the fence and you blowing a few away with ultra high altitude Phoenix. Have the Bear get uppity and position divisional AD close to the border as he also flys low-CAP 'escort' and you have kill hi-lo, in sequence, or get dogpiled by Fishbed/Flogger.

Next comes revolution and Mirage F-1 and F-5E and MiG-23 and F-4 and and and! Maybe you want to 'avenge' your downed F-4E's by engaging Saudi F-15's in the 'next round, we never heard about'?

Or maybe you've got a percentage modifier on your Phoenix being repaired and if they're not... HAWK anyone?:-)

How about a defection to Russia and millionaire status through your own AD /and theirs/?

Flying against Tu-16/22 bombers attacking your capital? Flying against fighter bombers attacking the Khard Island receiving points?
Maybe a few TCS but highly limited AIM-7/54.

And of course how often do you get to see a sand-cat camouflage, hmmmmmmmm?:-//

Bombcat-2000. You're off Taiwan when things get /nasty/. TBM and gas strikes. Chinese J-6/7/8 and Su-27/30 maybe even the odd FCB-1 'Leopard' and J-10 'Chinese Lavi'? And what about F-5E, F-104 (So Cheat), Ching Kuo, Mirage 2000, F-16, AT-3, and Apache/Kiowa for the ROCAF?

You're now flying the F-14D with Dual IRST/TCS, JHMC/AIM-9X, AMRAAM/AIM-7R (so cheat), ALE-50, F110-400 (or even 429, 27Klbst at 25,000ft!:-))

Underwing LANTIRN and JDAM/LGB/Cluster/TALD munitions as well as Digital TARPS with live feedback so you can task TLAM from subs as the DF-15 trails fly up from their TEL's you can smack them in the teeth, either directly (JSOW) or by shortie-reactioned sub-cruise.

Include an 'Easter Egg' to activate the F-14-21 with the F119 (or F110-232: 36Klbst) engines, thrust vectoring, frameless canopy, and the enlargedloves/redesigned wing. Oh, and a phased array radar and IFTS and _HARM_ under-wingglove too. This would let the more junior of our stick grippers 'come to terms' with lighter airframe starting-agilities by using a massive power reserve (ala Eagle).

The thing is, any halfway decent developer could make a Tomcat simulation as multirole/era 'varied' as we've come to expect from other halfpint platforms.

He'd just have to work a little harder, dig a little deeper, and have a mindset that wasn't totally fixated on a USN-real, 'non-co participative' history.

Now that's what I'm talking about! You got vision boss, I'll give you that. The multiple versions, the multiple radar versions... heck, I would kill for half of that stuff. The Iranians would be a nice touch (is there any accurate data on their performance out there?). Plus, you drew in my other favorite Navy bird - the F-8.
There is that version of the 'cat coming out in Jetfighter 4, but let's not kid ourselves; if it's anything like the last 3, it's not worth talking about as a decent simulator.

They did. It was called Jane's USNF, followed by USMF, then ATF, then NATO fighters, then USNF'97, all finally bundled as Jane's Fighter Anthology.
