Been thinking after seeing the lates round of screenshots from IL-2 by Maddox. Have a good feeling that the next batch of good 'hardcore' flight sims might be coming from our comrades in Russia.

Look at the continued support for Flanker 2 and look at what Maddox is doing with their IL-2. These guys are working for 'nothing' when compared to their western counterparts and are very good at what they do.

I'm wondering if SSI is onto something and whether they will be the publisher for IL-2 since Maddox does not currently have a publisher...

Just some thoughts

Yes, not yet dead...but in trouble.

We are pretty well covered in thw WWII arena.

MCFS II will finally provide a Pacific based WWII sim.

Battle of Britain will have a dynamic campaign.

IL-2 may become the F2 equivalnet of prop sims.

Janes Attack Squadron...hhhmmm...well...anyway

B-17 II will cover the bomber pilot types.

In the helo's we have C/H for the hardcore crownd and K-52a for the mid level simmers.

In the jet sims...we don't seem to have much coming.

F2 will continue to improve

Than we have EF2000 Thyphoon...

Not much on the modern jet side.

Whichever A-10 you're thinking of...cancelled. There's hope that SSI will put an A-10 in Flanker: Attack.

I think SSI/Mindscape has officially announced that an A-10 will be included with the next version of Flanker...

rals post tells an interesting story.
Yes, the combatsim market is in decline because we are fussy - in terms of games we will purchase. Some will only buy WW2 fighter sims, others just sub sims. Anyone else notice this?

Flanker 2 of flight sims, gawd I hope not. I've seen it, it's more like the MiG Alley/CYAC of prop sims.

Battle of Britain will be the Battle of Britain of prop sims. Either that or the MiG Alley of em. Heh heh heh couldn't resist.

B-17 II is going to be decent from what I saw at E3 and CFS II will definately be a winner.

I don't know if this is considered "hard-core" but Mission Studio's is doing Jet Fighter 4.

why hasn't anyone thought of doing a pure Vietnam sim or just a Phantom sim?

Kesmai decided it had better get into the rush of new WWII sims rather than Continue on with it's current groundbreaking Vietnam sim. They want to make sure nobody can make any money on WWII sims and that everybody gets fired by the corporate heads of game corporations.

patriotStorm:

Actually, I think the popularity of WWII sims is becuase of their simplicity. No matter how detailed you make a WWII sim, learning it would be fairly easy. I guess the general market is not really keen on trying to undertsand the different uses for two dozen different weapons a whole bunch of MFD's and the like.

Hapy4evr:

I believe there is a vietnam era Phantom sim coming. I think its called Rhino...and is being produced by a small group.
Unfortunately I lost the link to the site a while back.

Thanks

Here is the link for Rhino:
http://www.newmexico.com/rss/frames.htm

It hasn't been updated in a while. But they did send me an e-mail about 3 months back saying they were still working on the project. It is a very small group.

Hmmm...,looks like JF4 is going on the same flight with Gunship. I like the air explosions though.

I remember playing the original Jetfighter on my 8086 with 1MB RAM and CGA graphics with no joystick. It was impossible to control! Never more than 5 fps I'd say. Keyboard control was incapable of allowing you to land on a carrier succesfully at that frame rate. I also played JF2 and 3. JF2 was the only one I can remember that had the YF-23 in it.
Played them all, but never liked that silly "invasion of California" storyline.
I notice that at gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com/e3/talonroundup_a.shtm) they mention JF coming out in 92. Sorry, guys, but it was DEFINITELY before F3! I think JF2 came out around then.

JF2 WAS good at it's time, though. It was similar to F19 on Amiga500, which hooked me to Fsims.

., I think you mean F-18 Interceptor on the Amiga. It was coded by Robert Dinnerman, the same guy who made the Jetfighter series. Unless you're referring to F-19 Retaliator (Amiga), which was also a good game from the makers of EF2000.

Retaliator had, to this day, the FASTEST frame rate I'd ever seen. The graphics were pretty good, physics model laughable, but it was so SMOOTH to fly. Unfortunately the terrain was a 10x10 mile square or some such nonsense...perhaps that's why it was so smooth?
And on my old 386 no less! The FPS couldn't have been more than 30, but it blew away other sims telling me they're at 50!

Still have it-

_F-29_ Retaliator.

You got to choose between the Grumman FSW airframe and one of the early ATF (Lockheed) concepts.

Fantastic array of weapons slick terrain scroll and yes, nearly uncontrollable aircraft moment (I always wondered about that, why not simply damp the inputs to XX longer 'sample' interval of graphics?).

Gotta go, this little hairy green dude keeps chasing me around and telling me my X-Wing can't go FTL...
