How reliable is he? I've just read his book "Inside the Soviet Army" and while its very interesting and readable some of his info seems a bit suspect.
Is that the case?

Yes, he is very suspect. While he was in the Soviet Army, he was never close to Spetznaz at all, and may have even been a disinformation agent. Either way, a fair amount of his book is pure fiction.

He writes very entertaining books, just don't take them too seriously on any topic, except his interpretation of Operation Barbarossa.
