Is the acronym "MANPADS" meant to generically apply to any and all shoulder-launched SAMs or does it refer to a specific missile system? I'm assuming the former, but I'd like to know for sure.

'MAN Portable Air Defence System'
is the meaning, if I recall correctly, applies to any shoulder fired SAM system.

(In these politically correct /cough spit/ times perhaps it should be changed to PPADS -> Person Portable Air Defence System.)

Gee, I thought that MANPADS were only used once a month by "men" who where confused as to exactly what their sexual oriantation is!
