Metro Exodus

metro-exodusDeep Silver and 4A Games today revealed the details of the downloadable content which will make up the Metro Exodus Expansion Pass.

There will be two major pieces of story-driven DLC for the game, following brand new stories from the world of Metro. Instead of Artyom, players will have the chance to see through the eyes of a brand new character and of one of the Spartan Rangers, the Aurora’s only American, Sam. Both of these will be available as part of the expansion pass, but will also be available for purchase separately.

A quick word of warning: if you have not yet completed the Metro Exodus campaign, the following contains spoilers.

Coming in Summer 2019, the first story that players will follow, The Two Colonels, is that of Colonel Khlebnikov, just below the surface, under the dead city of Novosibirsk, as he makes his way home to his son, Kirill, for New Year’s Eve.

But all is not well with the people here: the slime is further consuming the tunnels, mutant attacks appear to be on the rise and the precious ‘green stuff’ that protects the people from radiation poisoning is running low. In order to secure the survival of any of the people, those in charge may need to take drastic measures…

Following the journey and experiences of Khlebnikov during the last days of life in Novosibirsk, which Colonel Miller retraces a year later, players can expect the classic story-driven gameplay of the Metro series in this new linear chapter, complete with a brand new weapon, the deadly flame-thrower, claustrophobic environments, and the all-too-familiar hair-raising tension.

The second piece of DLC, Sam’s Story, coming to players in early 2020, is the brand new sandbox survival level based on Vladivostok. Sam, a US marine at the Moscow embassy before the bombs were dropped, has long dreamed of returning to his homeland, and maybe finding his family alive. The prospect seemed impossible in the darkened tunnels of the Metro, but when the Spartans discovered that Moscow was not the only city left alive after the war, holding out hope didn’t feel so foolish anymore.

Sam makes his way away from the Aurora in search of a way back to the USA, arriving at the remains of Vladivostok’s tsunami ravaged harbours, ruined industrial buildings, and crumbling residential districts. To complete his journey, Sam will discover that he needs every tactic he has learned so far to survive, as his surroundings prove to be far trickier than expected.

Players will forge Sam’s path through the sandbox survival landscape of Vladivostok, as they take a brand new journey across the wasteland of post-apocalyptic Russia.

metro-exodusDeveloper 4A Games’ irradiated genre mish-mash is one of the most ambitious games on PC

By Harry Shepherd @ PCGamesN

In my sojourn through the post-apocalyptic wastes of Russia in Metro Exodus, I can’t help but think of competitive cooking show Masterchef. No, Chef Ramsay isn’t holed up in a makeshift bunker of a TV studio after the knife-wielding contestants took criticism the wrong way. Rather, Metro reminds me of the philosophy of UK hosts John Torode and Greg Wallace: a simple formula must be executed to nothing less than perfection, but the ambition of a dish that involves many complex moving parts mean that certain flaws can be overlooked.

One good outcry deserves another, and recent review scores on Steam for Metro: Last Light Redux and Metro 2033 Redux are suffering at the hands of users unhappy with the announcement that the Metro Exodus will be sold exclusively through the Epic Games Store. In many past cases customers have concealed the agenda behind their review bombing, but PCGamesN notes that in this case many of these new reviews address the Epic deal directly, some including an ASCII giving Epic the bird over this. An interesting aspect of this situation is highlighted by Ars Technica, where they discuss how the lower commission taken by the Epic Games Store may lead to some games being sold there at a lower price. This is the case with Metro Exodus, which can be pre-purchased from Epic for ten dollars less than Steam was charging. Ars notes this still means more profit for the developer and publisher, as their 70% cut of Steam’s $59.99 price tag is $41.93, while 88% of Epic’s $49.99 SRP is $43.99.

metro-exodusAnd stay tuned for in-depth videos covering each unique class of weapon in the coming weeks

Deep Silver and 4A Games today revealed the Metro Exodus Weapons Trailer. Packed with brand new footage and stunning tear-downs of the iconic hand-made guns of post-apocalyptic Russia, this trailer reveals the devastating arsenal of weapons used by Artyom and his band of Spartans as they journey across Russia.

Weapons now need to be cleaned and maintained to prevent overheating and jamming, adding another dimension to Metro’s immersive gameplay.

In addition to the Weapons Trailer, Deep Silver will release additional in-depth videos of the coming weeks that take a deeper dive into the four main classes – Handguns, Shotguns, Rifles and Special Weapons.
