“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” This is the second in a series of four articles on IL-2 and frankly, we haven't seen Viking1 this stirred up since EF2000. In this installment, Len talks about the evolutionary and revolutionary views (padlock, FOV, etc.) in IL-2.
That shot with the troops chugging away from the trucks and kubelwagen caused an involuntary full face drool! Tossing the beta through it's paces sounds like an excellent adventure, I can't wait for it to come out. It looks like a breakthru sim!

I frankly can't wait to see IL-2. If 50% of what you guys are saying comes true - then it will become the benchmark sim. One however: some of the airfields from Blue Byte's screenshots looked a little "artificially clean" with fresh gravel runways. Can anyone give us the scoop on how airfields look after some usage?

I'd rather not comment on features that aren't finished. As good as the game looks, effects and final touches are not yet in place.

I knew it! There is definately something wrong with the way the ground is rendered. It looks as though every single object that is not actually flat is rendered in 3D rather than just painted on the ground.
No more flat cities or forests? I'm not sure I can get used to that. I may have to change my entire method of low altitude flying. No more getting the plane to 50 feet and turning the autopilot on. Do that here and I'll run into something in no time.
And another thing, the tread on those truck tires doesn't look right...

Oh.. I will mention that when I overflew the runway before landing I saw black rubber marks on the first quarter where other aircraft had touched down...

ah heck.. here's a shot. A moment later my right gear touched down and the grey smoke plumed out behind the tire...
This shot is zoomed in a bit, the texture markings are more distinct from a bit further away. But the quality is obvious I think!

I have a preview copy (unfinished) in my role as a writer for combatsim and other publications. The game will release sometime in April, most likely.

Viking1,
probably hard for your to answer as you have a preview, but I ask anyway : Could you guesstimate the hardware requirements for the common user, that tries a sim first with all details maxed out ? I have a TBird 900, 384 MB Ram and a GeForce 2 MX. The MX performs quite well in 16 bit, but usually has fps breakdowns in 32 bit. Is there a big difference in graphical quality between 16 and 32 bit in IL-2 ?
