Nice review. One question though. I noticed you said the skys were always blue. Isn't this the on line sim that has that nice picture of a sunset with very nice clouds?http://www.3dfiles.com/games/aceshigh.shtml Is there really any weather? Shotgun

Shotgun- Thank you. I guess I should have used the words "severe clear" instead of "blue" to describe the stark skies of Aces High. There are some very nice sunrise/set effects, but no weather. There are very, very widely scattered clouds, but these are so few and far between as to be irrelevant. I was told that they are working on cloud layers, however------------------ Bob "Groucho" Marks "Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones." -Major Kong, USAF/SAC (As played by Slim Pickens in "Dr. Strangelove")

Hi Bob,Glad to see you’re still here I downloaded ‘Aces’ a while ago, after reading up on it. Haven’t played it online as yet, the phone bills/play charges here are a bit too steep for my liking…But when an isp comes up a free online package in my little village, then it may be time to try the online fun. I agree with you on the terrain/sky thing…sight seeing does get a bit dull after a while, though given that it’s supposed to be a combat arena, virtual tourism is not what you’re there for. The only niggles I had with it were ; a/ The majority of the engine sounds are too limp/same, you push the throttle to the firewall and it doesn’t sound like the engines straining at all, you just get that 3/4 hearted drone. (Though as I remember there are some alternatives you can download, to spice them up.) b/ As you mentioned before about seeing thru things, that you shouldn’t be able to, c/ The tracer trails always seem to point in the same direction… But these things are made up for, by the virtue of being able to fly so many different ‘classic’ planes, that are modeled very nicely, the flight models are excellent, no wishy washy dummed down affairs here I think my personal fav’s have to be the Macchi and the Tiffy. I’m still amazed that they’ve managed to stuff so much into a small amount of code…Make you wonder about what the rest have been doing ?? Great review, got it bang on !! Biggs out.

Good review Groucho, I'd messed with Aces High in earlier versions and nothing really jumped out at me enough to make me throw down $30 a month on the thing. The 8 player, H2H play isn't bad though, is free and has Corsairs, now appearently carriers too. Most of the sims I buy I only do for the online aspect anyhow. Hmm, 8 players, no real missions but it's online, PTO feeling, sounds like another sim I bought from a Big Gaming Company (tm) last year; but this one actually works well in multiplayer (hey it's made for it) from what I've seen in H2H mode. Maybe someone should post a head's up on the CFS2 forum, ooops did I say that? ------------------ "Go ahead and hate me because I'm beautiful...but I get a lot of action." - Uttered by Schatt on Kali, 22:36, January 03, 2001 [This message has been edited by Schatten (edited 01-11-2001).]
