European Air War was a fun game, but it wasn't working with my new joystick.
Perplexed, and more than a little frustrated, I scoured the burgeoning World Wide Web thing, looking for answers. I found them at Combatsim—and a lot more.
That was a dozen years ago, and I've never left.
At the time, Combatsim was ground-zero for gaming's most-storied WWII flight simulation, home to what was just coming to be called a "community" of knowledgeable, helpful, good-natured enthusiasts. Since then, I've swapped literally thousands of messages with like-minded lunatics at Combatsim. I've written for the site. I've served as XO for an online fighter squadron based here.
Most important, I've made lasting friendships with a truly outstanding group of individuals scattered all across the globe. Though I've never met a single one of them in person, they've become some of my best friends.
During the past decade we've learned a lot about the Web. It isn't automatic innovation. It isn't a license to print money. It's not a utopian cybersociety. None of that really matters. As somebody who's in the business, I can say without hesitation that Combatsim represents everything that's good about the Web.

Well, Dude, I figure I get more entertainment from CSim than I do from TV, so in a moment of sheer desperation that CSim might fold if Gail insists that she continue eating, I figure a small donationof $1/week won't be missed by anybody here, especially if my wife doesn't check her bankbook! I've been a regular at CombatSim for... geez! Way too long. I gotta get a life! Anyway, I donated some worthless U.S. paper dollars to help cover the cost of keeping the site going. It's the least I could do seeing as how CSim provides me with information about new sims, new computer hardware and countless hours of entertainment.
