...but I had to work at it. I got Sub Command and Il-2. I installed Sub Command and got a vid error. I confirmed I had the latest drivers and my system is well over minimum so I e-mailed tech.

I then installed Il-2. It took 20 minutes to load the game after installation and got a Windows "illegal operation" error at the end so I thought it was my chip.

Dejected, I put it up for sale here and spent two hours trying to forget my disappointment.

I came back to play Silent Hunter II and got another video error. Now, I've played this several times so I went a-huntin'. I reinstalled SH 2 and it couldn't find a video device. Ran every diagnostic I have; no problems. Now I kept the video driver on a disk so I re-loaded it. Voila!! Alles in Ordung! I have no idea of the disorder but I now know the cure.

Happy holidays!

It wasn't a chip problem. Something ate my video driver and I had to reinstall the driver. Chip's fine.

Bismark & Cobraj:

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card, video card, and also upgrade to Direct X 8.1.

Also...........

Jen sent me this a while ago:

"The msvcrt.dll file in your IL2 install is at least 1 version older than current. I deleted mine. Also, the Java runtime files in the IL2 "Bin" and "Lib" directories are apparently old too. I downloaded the newest version of that and copied the files into my bin and lib folders....between that and the msvcrt.dll I run quite a bit smoother now. I don't see the semi-stutter from IL2 swapping skins out of the cache folder any longer. "

I have not done anything about it yet, but I have heard rumblings about it before.

Boy, am I slowing up! 8.1 has been out since 11/8. I'm usually more on top of things. Thanks for the heads up.

The check-6 patch appears to be for high-end machines. Also, where do you get the run yime files?

Thanks.

Just don't use the conf.ini file, Bismark, in that patch. (I didn't either). Other than that it's not high or low end specific. It's just the java runtime files and a newer msvcrt.dll.

unzip it to a temp folder on you desktop and move the bin and lib folders to the IL2 spot.

Not sure about the .dll, I did a search on it and found it all over my system. Here's the kicker........

The version in my IL2 is the same as the "new" one, but the one in my windows/system directory is an old one.

So do I replace that?

Inquiring minds want to know, Jen

I compris'd enough to get it, and opened it with WinZip instead of their executable.
Unzipped all, except the conf.ini, into their pre-pathed spots, no muss, no fuss!
Seems pretty smooth...
