Just had to say something about a flight I just had. Since the patch and doing some tweaking on my pc, my FPS is now running in the low 20's to high 20's in the heat of battle.
Got in the air tonite on a run to lend some air support in Carignan. Wasn't much there when I arrived but kept enlarging my flight circle till I spotted 2 tanks heading into town. Figured I would practice my strafing some. I guess I killed one of em with my cannons because he dissappeared after 2 or 3 runs. Started on the other one. This guy was pretty good at returning fire. I was shocked he could get so close. Anyway, after about 7 or 8 passes, I augered in trying to look over my shoulder to see if I had killed him. Was so mad at myself. So I respawned and went back to see if I could find this guy again. Not sure if it was the same guy or not but there was another target dead ahead driving down the middle of the road. Made 3 or 4 passes and watched his tracers hit me once. I know not to fly a straight path out of there again! So I was coming at him again from his six and let him have cannons and MG's. Pulled up and Bam!!!! There were tracers all over my six. Looked back over my right shoulder and saw a Spitfire wingtip!! So I really went into a doopsy doodle for about a minute trying to shake him. Kept looking around and could not find him again. Was not taking anymore fire so I thought I had shook him. Not to call most of these guys on here bad pilots or nothing but quite a few of em have never flown before. So when I did not see him, I figured he had augered in or lost me.(It ain't easy learnin to fly without padlock) So anyway, I straightened out for just a sec and he shot me down quick!! There are some really good pilots on there. The only other sim that really made my heart pound and made me sweat was PE when I first started. With the ground troops and enemy planes able to kill ya along with really not knowing what may be around the next corner, I have to rate this thing the best game I have ever played bar none. If they are able to get this game going as advertised, and squads can get a structured war with plans going, this sim is gonna be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Wish I had thought to get a few shots of my strafing run for ya.

I have been playing this a while now, being a beta-tester and all. I love this game. I am getting decent frame rates all the time, and I am loving tanking and aircombat in the game. My only complaint is the flight model is somewhat simplified. (No BOB here )
For instance, I have a pretty hard time stalling the 109. I haven't ever hit a spin yet. I am sure they have done this because the majority of green pilots would spin out of the sky if they had this going.
As it is, green pilots are always asking how not to spin around uncontrolled on the ground. (You can lock your rear wheel with the "/" key if you didn't know)
Flying without padlock is indeed a challenge, and not being able to go to a cockpitless view forces you to stay honest. I have to admit, in EAW, I often succumbed to the gunsight view for the increased range of view.
A lot of people are looking at the game quite negatively for various reasons. I personally love the fact that I can climb in a Me109, join up with some other pilots, go tank hunting, get totally suprised by a pack of spits, get into a massive hairball with pilots of unknown ability (some are green, some are very vetran)and then limp back to base afterwards, land, and go again. I have had this happen many times.
I have never gotten the total suprise of the enemy from any other online flight before. In EAW or Janes WWII or whatnot, you join up with X number of other pilots who you know are out there somewhere and you'll be dogfighting soon.
I just love the game and I look forward to all the future enhancements that they are going to be included soon.

Have to agree with you there Endwarde. But since the FM's are so simplified, it really makes it hard to get a kill. At least in EAW, you know that a plane has limitations on what it can do. I have done manuevers in both the spit and 109 that there is no way I could ever do in EAW. You have no way of knowing what the other guy is gonna do in WW2OL. He could come right out of a manuever that should have depleted his energy. He should have a limited number of options of what to do next. Instead, he can go and do another said move and go out of your view. They really need to make the planes a little more accurate. Overall, I am enjoying the game. As you said, you never know what is around the bend.

It's hard for me to warm up to the air component of this title. I've only flown the 109, so perhaps I don't have a broad enough experience base, but I'm rather underwhelmed with what I've done so far. Other than engine torque this is the most arcade-like flying I've done in years. Some points I've found are,

E more or less never drops from manovers.

I've never managed to spin even when I've purposely tried. I mean, a 109e4 you can't spin???

The Spit can E-fight as well as the 109, the 109 can angle fight a Spit to a standstill.

Rudder is useless in the air. You can't punch it for a quick view behind you. It has little effect on coordinating a turn, which doesn't really matter since you don't lose any E in any case.

In short, at this time I don't recommend WWIIOL if you want to do air. Oh, you can have fun with it, even intense fun, but the flight models are several steps back from oldies like EAW. Ground is more rewarding for now, even with its horrible play (im)balancing. IL-2 appears to be the ticket for the next realistic prophead fix. For now, stick with an older sim if you want air fights.

Lest I give the wrong impression - I spend too much time online with this game. It's got a lot of big problems at this time, but they seem to be in it for the long haul. And so am I. Half a year from now it may be what it should have been on release. After a year it could be amazing. The potential is there, the committment is there, now it needs time to bake.
