You do have to be a little careful with the 'ol "just drop it into the EAW folder" approach. Almost all readme files say that and it does work that way---provided you don't change anything with STAB before you play. STAB erases all the skin/terrain files and replaces them with the new ones you have selected every time you choose a terrain set. Therefore it will erase anything you just added and it will not put it back. I have used the F6F no bar file you are referring to (stupid bar drives me nuts!!) and it works well. What you should probably do is put it in the STAB skin folder with the F6F skin you are using. It should then automatically get moved to the EAW folder by STAB when you select the terrain. Hope it works! Du PS: Just in case I guess right on your User Name and location: "Give blood....play hockey!" From a former CheeseHead

Hellcat/P-47 Cockpits:First things first. This might be obvious, but remember that the 3D virtual cockpit and the 2D fixed cockpit are different. The 2D cockpit can only appear at 640 x 480 and is hard-coded into the eaw.exe file. A modification for the virtual cockpit will not show up in the hard-coded 2D cockpit. Likewise, a modification for the 2D cockpit will not appear in the 3D virtual cockpit (at least, I don't think it will---it's been a long time since I've actually played EAW at 640 x 480). If you run at resolutions higher than 640 x 480, you will only have the 3D virtual cockpit, so the modification from the ECA Online site will not show up. There are currently three different modified cockpits available for the P-47C. These are: ---A 2D cockpit file available from the ECA Online site. Charles Gunst compiled this one, basically taking the P-51B Mustang cockpit and modifying it to appear in place of the P-47C. This mod will work in the default 2D cockpit, but not in the virtual one. ---A modified 3D file (".3dz") for the P-47C virtual cockpit. Developed by Paulo Morais, this is the one found at Cord's site. It works with all video cards. These fixes actually change the 3D cockpit shape, or in this case, a small part of the cockpit. This is the only 3D fix that I have listed in my Recommended Add-Ons list since the early fix only worked with Voodoo cards. (and I usually forget about Charles' mod since I've been running at 1280 x 1024 for several months now and no longer use the 2D cockpits) ---A modified set of .tpc files. You can find this one at -E's site under the USAAF section (click on the early-war USAAF insignia). This was the first "modified bar fix" for the virtual cockpit. This only works with 3dfx video cards; it will not show up on TNT cards. That is because this fix colors the bar or parts of the bar a specific shade of grey that 3dfx/Voodoo cards render as transparent. TNT cards don't "see" this shade as transparent. Bear in mind that some people complain this fix flickers on and off. That used to not be a problem that I had, until recently when I tried it again and found it going on and off... (Also, remember that this fix involves the use of a new transparency file. Dan Shaw's Clear Gunsight Fix also uses a transparency file, so the "Clear Glass" fix is not compatible with the "modified bar" .tpc file. You would have to combine the two into a new file to use them together.......although that's not really too terribly difficult to do.) RinkRat:
I would have to agree with DuDochNicht that the problem is likely to be with your Stab settings (unless you're running in 640 x 480 and using only the 2D cockpit, in which case the answer is stated above: the fixes from Cord's and -E's sites are for the 3D cockpit). Try this: put the file that you want in your EAW directory, and then make the file "Read-only" (*see below). Then play EAW and see if the fix works for you. If it does, then the problem was with your Stab settings---Stab was deleting the file everytime you ran Stab. However, Stab will not delete Read-only files. In fact, this "read-only trick" is often used to keep sharpened instruments and the like in the EAW directory instead of having to enter them into every Stab folder. Bear in mind, however, that using "Read-only" files can create a conflict if you are using Relent's Skins-n-More. Of course, you didn't say that were using it, but it is something to keep in mind if you decide to install S-n-M in the future. *If you already know how to do this, ignore this link.
