Question,Ive seen the prototype Commanche on various TLC & DISC. channel shows and was wondering if it will be a big leap in capabilities from the AH64. Ive read many arguments in other forums on if the F22 is worth the money spent an regards to its precieved increased capabilities over the F15\F18\F16 aircraft but Ive seen little in conversations about the AH66? vs AH64 comparisions. It certainly looks good, but can it carry the ordanance/payload needed, and accomplish the same types missions as the AH64. Lastly, I recently read a book that mythicly referred to a "seacommanche", is this also in the works for the US Navy? Thanks........ Cormac

The RAH-66 is not being used to replace the AH-64. It is the replacement helo for the AH-1 and OH-58. It is a medium helo with scout/attack roles planned for it. The AH-64 will work with it. The Comanche has very good stealth abilities. Its radar signature while buttoned down is smaller then a single hellfire. It is much quieter as well as being smaller to make it harder to see. The draw back to this mode is that you are left with only enough room in the internal weapons bays for 4 hellfires and 2 stingers. When in attack mode there are external mounts allowing for 14 hellfires or 28 stingers or 56 hydra 70 (2.75 inch) rockets. The big problem with adding this many weapons is the amount of fuel you would have to drop to carry them. It would only be for a quick attack. They are different helos for different jobs but they should work very well together. Z

Let's see...Intergrated ASE package, third generation FLIR for double the resolution and indentification at 50% greater ranges. Latest digital library for semi-auto identification and classification of targets (updatable). More flight-assist modes for reduced pilot workload. Biocular wide field of view helmet display. Self deployable over longer distances, faster, quieter and completely digital with tactical mode for C2 ops. I think it's a bleeding bargin at $15m a pop. Cheap at half the price. It is primarily a Recon & Attack Helicopter (hence the RAH designation, which also happen to be my initials by coincidence). The Comanche should work well alongside the Apache fleet (when they get them off the ground again).
