Ask Velcro from the 209th DeltaHawks about the Saitek X36. He *HATES* it. Just to point out that there are also unhappy users.I've never experienced the X-36 myself, I'm a Thrustmaster FLCS/TQS user at heart. Although the X-36 strikes me as odd looking I can't imagine a stick being "that bad" (according to Velcro) and still having such a huge crowd that is very happy with it. Maybe it would be a good idea to hop into a store and ask to "feel" the stick. That's what I always do. Feeling it, touching it and specially flipping the switches back and forth always gives me more impression of the stick then any picture, review or opinion. If the switches don't feel rock solid but plastic and weak I won't buy the stick, no matter how good it might be. So before spending money online, I'd say ....feel it first! ------------------

If I could just put my oar in here...I've had a gameport version for just under a year now, and I've never had any problems at all with F4, and I like what you can do with it. By the way... I think you can use either USB or gameport with the new version. True? Does the SGE still work if you use it via the gameport, or is it USB only? I'm just curious, as if my x35/6 gives up the ghost, I don't want to be back to bog-standard joystick. "Saitek, wiz zese controllers, you're really spoiling us..." ------------------ Tally Ho Thommo

The X36 USB REQUIRES SGE software. the electronics are different from the old, analog one. therefore the command center softe for example won't work. However, you can use usb OR gameport, that does not make any difference.I´m using the USB connection on a DX6.1/SGE1.1 and a DX7a/SGE1.3 system without any problems. Silverback

Actually the X3SUCKS does not work, it has quirks or goes FUBAR like mine did (in less than 5 months) and then Saitek will say "We can not recreate the problem" and then you never hear from them again....I tried SGE 1.1, 1.3 and still no luck I reinstall windows, directX stood on my toes and barked at the moon, still no joy , then all of a suddent the AUX keys and Shift key stared MORE strange stuff... Gosh, installed the Thrustmaster F22/TQS and NO QUIRKS or PROBLEMS.. If you are buying a stick stay away from the X3SUCKS. If you really must have one, go to the hardware store and get a large hammer first. How many Thrustmaster users complain of quirks or FUBAR sticks? How many CH users complain of quirks or FUBAR sticks? How many <<Insert stick here other than X36>> users complian of quirks or FUBAR sticks???? Damon 'Velcro' Rue FNGO - 209th VFS

I've had both x36 versions. My analog took a couple of years to go TU but that was about the time the usb version was released and there wasn't any other usb combo w/ a rudder incorporated available. The usb versions been great for Falcon4 (once I started the program from scratch). It (or the SGE program)doesn't seem to work consistantly in FA-18. The fact that this hotas (being usb) is made for stable and responsive flight makes up for it's squirreliness in programing to a degree. All that being said the bottom line for me is that I'm gonna be real interested when TM releases it's usb set around Christmas. Tim

Oh oh! I should have read the board before buying this hotas. But it looked so good in the store that I had to buy it. I got home in a hurry and installed it on my machine and it worked ok for a quick install. The next day when I wanted to boot my machine - guess what Win98 just froce on the start-up window! Only after several tries I succeeded in starting Windows. When I then tried to program the stick it just didn`t work. My browser froze and several other programs just as well. I must say that I never had anything like this before!!! In all fairness I must say that I'm still not 100% sure whether it is the stick or maybe just my ignorant self but from what I have now read in several posts makes me believe it's the soft. Oh by the way I'm using SGE1.3.

Thanks for the answer. I now must admit that it looks like it was my mistake after all. I did not have DirectX 7.0a installed. After I installed it - my machine boots normal again! Boy am I glad ;-)

I try to program my HOTAS setup as similar as possible for all sims. This makes use of 3 primary modes - AA, AG, and dogfight. I also use shifted commands for most keys in each mode. My Thrustmaster gear does this just fine. My X35/X36 stuff is buggy. I have to reset the main 3-way mode switch every time I use the shift key on the stick. So for every command I have to:1) Preset the shift key on the stick to match the command I need 2) Reset the 3-way switch to access the command I need 3) Click the HAT or whatever to issue the command. This is a REAL inconvience for me. If you are not using that many shifted commands and modes, the stick will probably be fine. I'm using the X36 stuff because I cannot program my TM stuff on my new machine. I think it's incompatible with the keyboard port. TM is working on new stuff and I hope they announce it at E3 in a couple of weeks.
