Hi, folks! I installed Stab 2.2 and then 2.2a patch. Stab is working fine now, but after this I noticed a lot of HD actvity and a sensible reduction in the computer performance, even not running the game. CACHEMAN 3.80 now reports a great depletion of resources, all around 50-60% (before this, was nearly 85-90%).
I'm not saying that it's because of Stab - same day I installed day two or three other programs, but they are very simple ones. Just remebered about a similar problem with other version and decided to ask about. Some other strange things also happened - EAW.INI lost the assigned screenshot key, and SCANDISK can't be used: some program is constantly writing to the disk. I closed all processes except Explorer and Systray, but at no avail.
Anyone had this kind of problem? I'm going to uninstall the other new programs, but I'm almost sure that it will do nothing. There are no viruses or Trojans in my machine (checked now). Any ideas?... Can I reinstall the version 2.1 of Stab, just to be sure?
Thanks!

Spit9,

I would start by deleting programs one at a time starting with the last one loaded. You will then be able to find the culprit! Bilko says his machine is running eaw and other
games slower also. Maybe still some little Stab ailment?

Thanks, Donster! As I said, can't say for sure. The other programs were things like WinRescue and so; maybe they could do something to Windows, but I doubt they could change EAW.INI. I'll do that rigth now and post any news.

I guess it's something else not stab 2.2a. Runs here without troubles now.

It's amazing how Windows behaves in this regard.

My PC (Celeron 366@460/550Mhz, 128mb RAM, Riva Vanta 8mb) was running Rogue Spear badly. Infact with the processor at 460Mhz and the screen card at 100Mhz (when in need I can clock it to 150Mhz) it was almost unplayable.

Finally, I formatted my primary drive (A Quantum Fireball XE4.3) and installed Windows 98 Second Edition.

And WOW!

I mean wow! I havn't reinstalled EAW yet (yes, yes I'm a sinner) but Rogue Spear runs beautifully with the CPU at 550Mhz and the Vanta at 100Mhz.
The difference in incredible, it's like I have a new PC...all that just from re-installing.

So you see....

I dont know, I'm sure there was a point.

Yes, I guess it's another problem with Windows. I removed all the programs I had installed these days, but nothing, just a small increment in resources. And the problem is there even when not running EAW or Stab. There is also now some signs of instability - seems that I'll need to reinstall Windows AGAIN...
Thanks, people!

This could be the thing to do, Spit9. When you install a lot of programmes, they all get their entry in the Windows-Registry. When uninstalling, almost always ther is junk left there and thus the registry gets blown up way out of proportion - and it is loaded everytime into the memory when sarting the computer.

Before you do a format c: and reinstallation of Windows, there is a way to 'clean' the registry, something with 'regedit regdat.reg' or the like. I don't know the correct syntax anymore, and it takes some hours (yes, hours) to do a clean up that way. But as we have some software-guru's here ( CFran maybe you know the syntax) maybe they can help you further.

Spit9,

Something else to check is how much available hard disk space you have left. Windoze uses hard drive space as backup memory, and needs a good sized chunk free.

If you have been downloading tons of skins, terrains, etc, (and who hasn't been ), you may be running out of available space. Make sure your browser cache and temp folders are empty, and any unecessary files are removed. When this is done, try Scandisk and DiskDefrag again.

Thanks!
TQM, have yet about 1Gb free HD; but to clean cache and temp directories is a good idea...

Stan, I use RegClean often, but is another MS product... you never know if it really did something. About RegEdit, don't know if it can do a clean; I think it was just a Register Editor. CFran, any idea?...

That regedit (or the like) makes a 'backup' of the existing registry and then writes a new one... as said I can't remember it exactly. Will check all the notes I have
