I just re-purchased F4 after seeing that the 108 patch has fixed alot of things. I wanted to play a buddy and I have a cable modem, what is the best way to do this. I noticed that there are a few different options-modem, i believe you would just enter the phone # and his system would answer but this isn't practical cause he's long distance.Internet which looks like you would put the internet address in there but how do you know what the #is if you are the host, so you can tell others?and lan which is the tcp/ip, do you just enter a room name with a password and he would just do the same and we would be connected? What would be the best option for me? Excuse my ignorance about this but I haven't done it like this before, usually I play on mplayer which sucks most of the time. Thank you for any help.

Here is a copy of a mail that I send to someone with a much simmilar question. It might help you too. The IP number can be found easely in the info page of your budy.

Hi,

I can see by the questions you ask that you are not very well know with the
multiplayer part :-) Don't worry I will help as good as I can.

First the last question because that is the easiest to answer. A LAN is
short for Lokal Area Network. This means that the computers are directly
connected to each other in a room. This is done with networkcards which can
give a very fast and stable connection. So what LAN squadrons do is that
they meet at a certain place, hook their computers to each other and have a
very nice weekend flying campaigns etc.

Now lets talk about connecting to other people. To do this you need a few
"friends" that want to fly with you. You can get those friends on forums,
chatrooms etc. ICQ is a vital tool with this. Since you are always online I
asume you have ICQ and if you don't then you can get it here www.icq.com .
Also Roger Wilco is a vital tool for talking to each other while you fly and
can be found here www.rogerwilco.com . Both programs are free.

The procedures how to connect online are not very clear in the manual but
are very well explained here http://ftws.sim-arena.com/consop.htm These
procedures are a little outdated but the essence is still the same. For the
latest information about how to connect you must go to www.ibeta.com . Here
you also find the latest patch which you need for flying online. All people
who fly together must use the same (latest) patch.

As you can see you have a lot of reading to do but take the time to
carefully read all the instructions. Especialy the instructions in the FAQ
at ibeta.com and in the readme that belongs by the patch.

Then I whish you a lot of flying pleasior and if you have more questions,
don't hesitate to ask, I am here to help. Some times I don't have directly
time to help but then you must be a little patient :-)

Razorblade- I wanted to just say thanks for taking the time to write that long post. I will definately goto that site and get the patch and read all I can. I am very happy to be flying F4 again after purchasing 2 failure sims(USAF, F/A18)Took F18 back because it was so bad. Cant believe this is only 19.99 now, when I first got this sim it was 50.00. Thanks again.
