I have a Suncome Flight Controller USB, and I am having problems with it while playing EECH. When I get into the game, my view always keeps looking up. In Apache-Havoc, the hat was used for view, so I assume that it is used for the same thing in EECH, and its the hat that is all screwed up. Also, when I am flying, i can turn every direction, except for right. I have tried lots of different things to get it working. I can't play my game untiol I do!
Please help me fix my problem.

Thanks

First off, I'm not familiar with your joystick. I installed the demo on a friends computer and his hat switch wouldn't work in the game. The only way to make it work was to program the hat to the keyboard view keys. If your joystick buttons are programmable, try programming the hat to the keyboard view keys.

I had this same problem with my wingman USB. When I connected it to a gameport instead, it worked fine. Then I got the new drivers and re-tried the USB port, and it worked. So, check to see if there are newer drivers - if not, try the gameport.

Keep looking. You may have more ports. Keeping changing the port you have the joystick plugged into, And reboot between trys, and it ought to work.

Nope, thats didnt work. I tried both of my ports, twice, and it does the same thing.
And I only have two... I'm sure, unless one comes out the bottom of my computer....
I'm still stuck with this great game, and I can't play it.

If you have a USB stick, and it cannot be reconfigured to a gameport (soundcard) connection, then that's that, and any USB port will work the same. So your best bet is to change your driver. Open up your game controllers applet from control panel, select "add" and you will see a list of joystick drivers. Select one that looks like your configuration ie. "2-axis, 4-button joystick" and recalibrate. Try a few of them before you give up. Some of them like "CH Flightstick Pro" work on a variety of different brands and models. There is a good chance this will work.

Good luck

AaronL,
See if there are new drivers for your USB Controller. You might also try using the generic (I forgot if it's Microsoft or Intel?) USB drivers. There have been several posts on other sites regarding USB issues and this step usually seems to clear them up.

Also, Microsoft posted that ther is a known issue with the VIA USB controller. Go to Microsoft's site and download the patch which should correct most problems with this product.

Murphcat:

Thats one of the first things that I tried. The only problem is that when you select a joystick out of there, the computer thinks that it is connected by a serial port. I don't know how, or if you can, change it to USB
So I got stuck there too. If you know how to change it, please do tell.

Aaron, I'd put my money on what Hatch is suggesting. Try switching your host controller driver to the standard one.

Also, if you have a VIA chipset, you need a filter driver (not part of the 4-in-1 set). If you have a VIA and an AMD proc, AND w98SE, then there's a fix available from MS, dealing with a timing issue.

Tell us if works out (or not)...

How do you do this?
Also, I was looking for that fix and couldn't find it, give me a link or tell me where to get it?

Thanks a ton.

Go to the My Computer icon and right click.
Go to Properties.
Go to Device Manager tab.
Look for Universal Serial Bus Controller and expand (click on the plus).
You should see one or two entries for that end in PCI to USB Universal Host Controller.
Highlight one and click properties.
Click the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
Navigate to What do you want Windows to do? and select "Display a list of all..."
Choose Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller (if not there, click show all hardware and choose it here).
Don't know if you'll have to do it multiple times if there's more than one entry.

Good luck.

Hatch is right, but as a sidenote, there are two different standards of host controllers. The one Hatch mentions (UHCI), and the OHCI (that entry should end with "to USB Open Host Controller"). So don't be surprised if you see a different name.

Also, the link for Microsoft's bugfix is here

I'd suggest searching the knowledgebase for your host controller manufacturer, and also the manufacturer's website.

I got the bug fix, but its for Windows 98: Second Edition, and I have the 1st, so that wont be the problem then.
I cant change the driver until I get my Win98 cd back form a friend, so I'll tell you what happens when I can do that.

I mailed Suncom (the joystick company) and the guy there said that he didn't know what the problem was, but he was getting the game on the weekend, and e could see if there was a problem, or it was just me or whatever. So if changeing the driver doesn't work, we might have a solution next week.

I switched the driver and it didn't help. The joystick company had been good for replying to my mails for the first bit, but I haven't heard much from them lately.
Any other ideas?

AaronL,

sorry it didn't work. I don't have much else to suggest, all I can think of is unchecking "USB error detection" in the host controller properties (device manager, extremely long shot, probably won't make any difference). Also what patch are you running. I recall someone mentioning that 1.4.5X cured some of his USB no-joy.

I tried the patch and that also didn't work.
I have no idea what to do, I'm thinking it might be time to get a new joystick (even thought this one is only a year old), I'm frustrated and mad.

If it still is under warranty then send that bad baby back and get another one :}

I am having the same problem trying to get my Sidwinder Precision Pro 2 USB to work. I have followed step by step the suggestions above.

I do have VIA chipset, Win98 SE, AMD 450 K6III on the desktop and Win98 AMD 433 K6 II also with a VIA chipset on my compaq laptop.

I'm in a pickle as I travel a lot and need USB support for the Presario laptop. Microsoft update for the problem as well as the usb filter update didn't work etc etc.

One note however is that the joy seems to work on every single game but Comanche vs Hokum and I've been experimenting with a ton of em. None as fun though : ( I'll keep watching this line and will keep trying.

Shoot,
Have you gone out to www.viatech.com and downloaded the latest 4 in 1 update? It automatically detects and installs the latest updates (10-AUG-2000). This one download cleared up issues I was having with my USB, DMA, and probably lots of other 3 letter combos.
Just a note. After you install them (and reboot), you will have to unplug and then replug your USB devices.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I installed the 4 in 1 and the usb filter on both the laptop and desktop as well as the Win98se+via+usb patch from Microsoft, disabled the usb error correction etc etc.

I have set up hat to use keyboard commands, and used standard pci usb drivers plus have unplugged back and forth from laptop to desktop and still trying.

Funny how it sees the joystick but it won't work in the game once launched. Seems to look skyward for some strange reason... with F1 it flicks to forward then back to sky. I thought for sure the Hat trick would work but reconfiguring it to keystroke did allow it to do keystroke commands but only mommentary then they are back to looking into sky. No axis, rudder, buttons and keyboard commands work however locked on look to sky.

I've upgraded to beta X also and tried everything mentioned twice.

I am glad to hear that someone out there has been able to get a usb joystick to work. I'm use to running down conflicts with ID #1 Precision pro's only advice offered with no obvious conflicts on computers etc makes me a frustrated camper.

That is the EXACT same problem as I have, I can't get it to work yet, and I have tried everyhting that the people had told me to try.....
Hopefully soon someone will get the right solution. Please keep them coming.
